Local Athletes head to Antigua
The two day track meet run by the Concerned Parents and Teachers Sports Association is named for Sir Reginald Samuel, who is the foremost retired Antiguan Sports Official alive today.
Sir Reginald Samuel is a former Director of Sports and former Chairman of the National Sports Council, and past Sports Master of the Antigua Grammer School. He is most noted for the designing of the Antigua/Barbuda National Flag and the sculpturing of the “Statue of the Family” in the front of the State Insurance Corporation on Redcliffe St., St. John’s.
Amongst the “team” making the trip with Coaches Dag Samuel, Winston Potter and Omar Jones are Tynelle and Trevia Gumbs, Shaian Vanderberg, Chelsea Flax Solomon, Shamica Glasgow, Sh’Keida Lavacia, Zara Brown, Gia Malone and some of the other young and upcoming future stars and of course some boys.
The Meet itself has always proven a successful one and the athletes will have their work cut out to emulate the performances from 2012.
Last Year Kiara Huggins and Chelsi Flax Solomon warmed up proceedings with 3rd and 4th placing in the U15 Girls 100m with times of 13.63 and 13.67 respectively. Then Nelda Huggins romped to “gold” in the U17’s in a time of 12.35 seconds with Shamica Glasgow finishing 4th in a time of 13.37.
In the Under 20 Girls, Shaian Vandenburg crossed the line in first place in 12.50 just ahead of team mate Ashphil Robertson. The Girls Open race was comfortably won by Sanya Penn in 11.92.
In the U15 girls 400m, Sh’kida Lavacia claimed second place with her time of 1:02.69 and Kardisha Auguste ran 1:07.25. In the U17 male, Kyron McMaster took the tape with a time of 51.79 and in the U20, Shaquoy Stephens finished first in 49.91, holding of Royce Davis who came second in 50.15.
In the Long jump, Sanya Penn won her second “gold” with a distance of 5.53m and Tarikah Warner took “silver” with 5.16.
On Sunday in the 150m, Zakharia Frett romped home in20.06. U15’s Lavacia and Flax Solomon then came 2nd and 4th respectively in the 200m with times of 27.75 and 28.83 respectively, before Nelda Huggins won the u17’s in just 25.63. Shamica Glasgow finished 2nd in 26.77 and Penn won her third title in the Open race, stopping the clock on 25.08. Vandenburg also claimed her second victory in the U20’s in 25.59 whilst Robertson took “silver” in 31.86.
Not to be outdone, Ashphil’s mom, Philomena Robertson came home with a first place finish in the 1500m with her time of 6:11.03 and a second place run of 14:04 in the 3000m.
In the U17 male 200, McMaster romped home in 23.32.
Competition starts at noon today with the Javelin and Shot Put, before attention turns to the track with the 60m and 100m races. High Jump and Long jump then feature before the first day concludes with 400m heats, 100m finals, 400m finals and the Medley Relays.
Day two action surrounds the 800m and 200m races before the event wraps up with 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m relays.
