ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Junior Minister for Financial Services and Economic Development, Honourable Lorna G. Smith, OBE, (AL) has stated this is a time for preparation and not panic.

In a statement issued on Friday, April 17, 2026, the Junior Minister assured the public that her ministry is working to cushion the effects of global uncertainties on local consumers in the Virgin Islands.

Please be assured that our expanded technical team is meeting daily, reviewing global market signals, analysing shipping and import trends, and advising on the steps needed to keep our economy steady,” Hon Smith added.

Positioning the VI to remain stable

This, she stated, ensures that "we are not reactive, that we are anticipating pressures early and therefore positioning the Virgin Islands to remain stable."

The Junior Minister emphasised that the government is actively engaged on the ground, noting, ”We meet in our supermarkets every week, pushing our carts, comparing brands, looking for value, making thoughtful choices and chatting about these. So, I am very much on the ground with you on the price realities you face. Indeed, this first-hand knowledge helps to guide the policies we advance.”

Basket of Goods initiative list of goods finalised

Smith highlighted that the Basket of Goods initiative remains a priority for the government.

"This is why that Basket of Goods initiative remains a priority. The technical framework is complete, the list of essential items has been finalised, and discussions with retailers and importers will continue as this initiative advances."

Honourable Smith acknowledged that the process took time because it needed to be executed properly.

The Junior Minister further stated, “We will continue to update you as we progress. Included in the basket are child care items, fresh produce, meats, some fish, dairy, canned goods, dry goods, baked goods and hygiene products.

G'ovt paying close attention to global conflicts

She further stated that in this period of global uncertainty, the public can be assured that the government is fully engaged, paying close attention, and acting in their interest.

"Just as I look for value when I shop, we are working to ensure that every household can depend on fair prices and a stable market."

On April 16, 2026, the Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), announced a multi-step measure for the Virgin Islands (VI) in response to increasing prices due to recent global events.
