ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Opposition Member Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3) has said with some people feeling concerned about their safety and property in public places, there should be an effort to have more streetlights in place.

Speaking during the Second Sitting of the First Session of the Fifth House of Assembly on July 7, 2023, Hon Fraser said the infrastructure for electricity in the territory has not yet been fully restored since the hurricanes of 2017, and many areas of roadways across the territory are still in darkness.

He said people have expressed fears of walking in those dark areas or leaving their cars parked there.

“I do not want anyone in this territory, Madam Speaker, to walk in fear. You have to be wise, don’t be stupid and let your guard down but you should not be walking in fear.

‘Light the place up’- Hon Fraser

“And if that is coming from the lack of some form of security, it’s just simple, light the place up. That’s the least we can do. You not putting out any police officers. I don’t see you increasing the size of the force so if you can’t out police officers, put out the lights. I think we can do that.

Hon Fraser was at the time giving his support for Sheldon Scatliffe as Board Chairman of the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC)

In the Cabinet meeting of June 7, 2023, chaired by His Excellency, Governor John J. Rankin, CMG at the Premier's Conference Room where all members were present, Scatliffe received Cabinet approval to be appointed as Chairman of the BVI Electricity Corporation's (BVIEC) Board, according to Cabinet statements released on Friday, June 23, 2023.

Meanwhile, Hon Fraser implored Mr Scatliffe to use his “talents” to improve the standard of living in the territory in a way that he can and adding and restoring more streetlights is one way he can.

“And he is going to need the support of the Minister [of Communication and Works],” Hon Fraser stated.

Hon Fraser have been in political office for many many many years. as a matter of fact he was the minister for works and had the prime opportunity to make sure our territory’s public roads were well lit plus street water throughout the communities. now here in 2023 chat nonsense

Back then the roads were not in the bad condition as they are now. Stop trying to muddy the water and get on the wagon to get these things fixed please.

It is a shame that we are this darkness on the roads since 2017. When I drive along these roads coming from the airport I get so angry to see the darkness that the taxi drivers have to drive the tourists in at night. It is a crying shame! Get y'all act together man!!

With Hon. Fraser on this. The place needs improved lighting system. Walked up Main Street the other day, some areas were poorly lit, while others needed brighter bulbs. The trees and bushes around the poles need to be cleaned. Same for the Lower Estate to Huntum's Ghut area. Since the hurricane some of these poles were damaged and still remain broken to this day.
