ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- A woman from California, USA is the latest to publically put regional air carrier LIAT on blast for alleged poor customer service and lack of compassion after she was left stranded in St Croix, US Virgin Islands last weekend.

“I would publicly like to put LIAT on blast for their lack of compassion, rude employees, and horrible customer service,” Ms Yonette Hobson told Virgin Islands News Online.

Ruined vacation

She alleged that their vacation was ruined when she, her partner and their 2 children were left stranded in St Croix on July 29, 2016 because they were 7 mins late for check-in and their seats were sold.

“The sad thing is that we were at the airport on time returning a rental but was completely unaware of the check in times and assumed since it was a domestic flight we'd be fine so I take responsibility for my ignorance, not knowing better as this was my first time here."

However, Ms Hobson said she expected some common courtesy from LIAT agents there but was met with lack of empathy. “They basically left us to fend for ourselves.”

“We came all the way from California to see my husband's family in St Croix for 1 week and then to meet my family in Montserrat for 1 week. This would've been our girl's first time to the Caribbean and meeting our families.

“We were heading to Antigua to make a connecting flight to Montserrat which we couldn't make since they didn’t have any available flights. They told us we would have to make our own way but again it's carnival weekend and finding 4 seats were next to impossible.”

Costly experience

Hobson said with their excitement gone and despair sunk in, she inquired about flying standby on the next flight and the agent said they would have to pay $360 but not guaranteed to get on the flight and would have to pay an additional $360 each time to attempt standby.

“I've never heard of such a policy and couldn't afford to take the chance so we forfeited our tickets.”

Since the family’s departing flights to California was out of Antigua and all flights were sold out, the Hobsons had to reroute their return flights and pay an extra $800, losing $2400 in total for all the unused flights.

“My family in Montserrat never gave up hope and found only 1 seat for me to come, meaning I'd have to leave my husband and kids behind but paying another $900 to American Airlines to change my flight again was out of the question on my teacher salary.

“Unfortunately, the ticket was booked and even though the transaction took a few mins, it was irreversible and they couldn't reach LIAT to cancel for full refund being a same day purchase. Since no good deed goes unpunished, they had to pay $186 to cancel the reservation, more money going down the drain for a trip that wasn't going to happen. In all this disappointment and turmoil, LIAT offered no relief.”

Conflicting information

Hobson said during her plight she kept getting conflicting information from LIAT’s desk and phone agents, because one allegedly told her he would be able to get an airline credit to apply to another airline while another allegedly told her their tickets were forfeited and would need to repurchase.

“I will take this up with a lawyer to see what rights I have but in the meantime, I'd like my story published so customers are made aware of LIAT's shady dealings and to avoid them at all cost until they start doing better and service their customers,” Hobson, who confirmed with Virgin Islands News Online that the family is now back in San Diego, California.

Virgin Islands News Online made several attempts to get a response from LIAT officials in Antigua after being directed there, but they could not be reached.

Hobson also said she has been trying to reach LIAT officials on the issue to no avail. “I have contacted the FAA to see what they can do on my behalf,” Hobson told this news site today, August 4, 2016.

LIAT has often been making headlines about alleged poor customer service.

Based on this story it seems like a pompous American who think they can do what the hell they want because its the Islands. She calling FAA to complain LIAT when she already admitted she was late. How pompous and arrogant of her to think that because she is American she can do as she pleases? In the USA if you are not on time for check in your ass is grass so she needs to hush with the nonsense.

Yes she was late.... so you can defend LIAT on that basis. But what about the $360 for standby but no guarantee, do you defend that too?

If it was you and your family and you lost all that money, you would have felt the same way. You are the true pompous A$$.

Are you people for real? THEY WERE LATE!!!!!!!! No argument here! What about all the other people on the flight who were on time and had their own connections? F them because you have family to meet and taking your sweet time? Some people are so self-absorbed and entitled that they dont even accept when theyre wrong. You choose the wrong time of year to fool around with getting your flight to the Caribbean as many Islands have Carnival and its peak travel time like xmas. If American rejectef you for being late checking in we would never hear it. However, LIAT is easy to blame huh? Never thought I would see myself defend LIAT but in this case based on the story told, none of this were their fault. Respect people's time and you will be fine next time. She clearly said they took their cool time returning a rental and not considering check in time so how is that LIAT fault?

Any one that knows me kno I'm always late and I have always been able to get on a plane, however I don't travel the Caribbean after liat left me stranded

You see right there, You are bringing reference to the U.S of A, Europe, and South American airlines and such policies. What you are failing to realize is that we are not talking about those regions we are talking about a Leeward Islands based and Government owned airline who already has a bad reputation and are trying to fix this. In an attempt to fix this issue LIAT has gotten 8 new ATR aircraft which are more reliable. The fact that said customer was late and still expects to be put on a flight on Carnival weekend is completely insane. Carnival season is the most revenue bring and busy season for the Caribbean Aviation Authority. Therefore the customers complaint was completely invalid as is your reference

Don't do to people what u don't want people to do to u. If we had to punish liat for been late. Omg. Just imaging. Because liat is late 90% of the time and thousands of passengers have to wait for hours daily on liat.. Tell me how what liat did to this family can be right..Then How u rate what liat do to us daily.

One family late=Flight time departure late=at least 30% of the 90% that they are late. Not defending... Just saying. Just because they are usually late does not make it right to show up late for a flight. The customer service can be better.
  • truth be told (04/08/2016, 20:22) Like (6) Dislike (13) Reply
Why do you think LIAT has a reputation of being late? it is because of passengers like Ms. hobson. What they cannot do with the bigger airlines, they feel they can do with LIAT. The police and other people at the airport can vouch for the agents, they were never rude nor disrespectful. I was there and people need to speak the truth. With American airlines, you have to check in 3 hours before the flight or you are left to fend for yourself.

Ms. Hobson, LIAT is an international flight not a domestic flight, so don't go blasting LIAT when you were at fault.
    • Possibly (04/08/2016, 21:50) Like (13) Dislike (0) Reply
I sure there can be enough blame to go around, for or against. Situations like theses happen when policies and procedures are not well established, communicated consistently, and understood. They may need to savage their reputation by consistently enforcing the policies and procedures as other successful airlines do in the category, in the industry.
    • LIAT? (05/08/2016, 07:54) Like (7) Dislike (1) Reply
LIAT will not be late because a customer comes 7 or 20 minutes late. The real problem is with LIAT and their operations manager who should be fired long ago. I you travel from EIS to Grenada when you reach Antigua the Flight number changes so everyone have to get off the flight clear security and get back on the plane again. This happens again in Barbados. So on a good day This flight will be one hour late minimum, because this extra security screening is not accommodateded into the schedule. The truth of the matter is that LIAT was overbook and the family present them with an easy solution. You are late so your seat was sold. Can you see these LIAT agent booking four seats in seven minutes. No the seats were already booked. AA and most airlines would not leave you stranded they will try to offer an alternative. Can you imagine being charged to be on standby?

You late= Flight departure late= other persons connecting flight late.

Yes she was late but the issue was how inconsiderate and incompetent LIAT was in handling the situation. I fly Delta all the time and the one time that I was late, customer service helped me to arrange another guaranteed flight without excess cost and frustration. Paying $360 for a flight that you are not guaranteed to get on is unacceptable. And the conflicting information this woman received from the other agents as well as not being able to get an answer from LIAT corporate is unacceptable as well. This airline and its customer service practices (or lack of) is a disgrace.

These people make it seems like the other airlines in the US and elsewhere is better than liat. Liat is no different from any other air line in the world. She need to stop talk bull the air lines in the states leave you behind for one dam minute. Time is time they tell you to be there two hours before your flight leaves just be there. Why should other passangers miss their connecting flight, because you and rude ass family members was late. Lady who the hell you think you are that others should miss their connecting flight because you could not get to the air port on time. Have you taken time to listen to yourself you were late it don't matter if its one minute or thirty seconds you were late. Next time leave the house thirty to fourty five minutes before the two hours and all will be fine. The problem with people is that thay have heard it so much that Liat has a record for being late ,well you found out that not true all the time. Now your ass know better. Liat did nothing wrong you messed up your own vacation point blank. Don't come from the states try to bring down our Caribbean airline.

Happens all over, though LIAT is pretty darn foul. Was in San Juan waiting to board a flight to St. Thomas, and the
airline did the opposite. The flight coming to San Juan from Washington DC had problems so those people would've
missed their connecting flight to the Virgin Islands. What Jet Blue did was hold up the flight out of St. Juan on behalf
of the delayed DC flight passengers many of who had just met with the Obama administration about FATCA. So the
request to hold up the 2nd flight came from the White House and was honored by Jet Blue. The VI Gov't reps were
accomodated all the way home, but other passengers had to eat it. Sad but true....

Ok, the lady was late for her flight, that does not give anyone the right to talk about her being pompous and Americans this and that. The Airline could have handled the problem differently rather than keep making her dig into her pockets. I was late for a flight to Hawaii and could not board. The airline rescheduled me for the next day, did not charge me extra and give me a hotel and food voucher for the night.
