ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Young Virgin Islands sailor Thad A. Lettsome will be racing for the Territory next week (December 11-15, 2017) at the 47th Youth Sailing World Championships in Sanya, China.

The Youth Worlds is the pinnacle event in the youth racing calendar and, over the years, a long list of sailing legends including Sir Ben Ainslie and Russell Coutts have won medals at this event as they emerged onto the international stage.

Lettsome will be sailing in the boys Laser Radial Class against 51 other competitors. Nearly 400 competitors from 62 nations will race across nine classes and with just one spot available to each country in each class, competition even to get selected is fierce.

Sailing scholarship

In August this year, Lettsome attended a training camp in the Dominican Republic organised by World Sailing, the world governing body for the sport. As well as top level coaching, there was also a scholarship to attend the Youth Worlds in China up for grabs. Assessed on a range of factors including sailing skills, attitude, motivation, fitness and preparation, Lettsome impressed the coaches with his hard work and talent and was awarded the scholarship.

Lettsome arrived in Sanya on Tuesday with coach Chris Watters to attend a pre-regatta training programme, part of the scholarship package.

Sailors will be officially welcomed to Sanya on Sunday December 10, 2017 with the opening ceremony.

Racing is scheduled to start at 11:00 A.M. local time on Monday December 11, 2017 and will conclude on Friday December 16, 2017.
