Letters To Kilo

We aren’t born knowing how to do this thing called life. If you could write letters and send them back in time to your younger self, what would they say? What lessons would you want to tell that younger you, about life that you’ve come to learn today? This Column Letters To Kilo (a nickname my grandmother gave me as a child) is all about what my letters to my younger self would say.

The Blind

Dear Kilo,

I was thinking about you today, as I was looking through the window on this stormy, rainy day. I often got the urge to run out in the rain and play, but then I’d hear the voice of grandma say, “boy come in this house and pick up a book”. Her way of loving and protecting you was in that look. A look that said a lot of things including, “don’t let me have to ask you again”. It felt so good to get wet, to be care-free and unkempt. It wouldn’t take you long to learn that people do not consider rainy days to be good. Perhaps it’s their point of view, without the rain how would you know that sunshine could come out of you? How would you recognize the love of those who cared for you, because they didn’t always make it plain? Sometimes all hurting people know how to do, is cause others pain.

I realize that now, like I do our ability to bring the sunshine through the rain. You’re going to need to learn how to do that Kilo, because there will be some dark days ahead. However there’s a light within more powerful than any bulb above your head. You don’t need a lighthouse to help you navigate the roaring sea. You can be a lighthouse and a vessel that helps guide others if you allow God to use you to be.

Many who have eyes cannot see; blind men cannot lead others to be free. The design of the eye is quite exquisite. Its depth lies far beyond what can be seen at a glance. What blind men see is like a window outside a home, and with that limited perspective they conclude what they cannot know. They have many opinions about what they think is so; and those opinions have nothing to do with you Kilo. Blind men wish to make their worries yours, but do no such thing when the gift of sight is yours. Worry is a waste of time; the more I live, that truth I find. Worry is a symptom of the blind. While you may not understand right now all I’ve told you with your young mind; remember that blind men often do not wish to see. They prefer to live their lives on the surface not ever really knowing who they were meant to be. The blind always want company, because it helps them cope with their misery. They can only speak of illusions they conclude together, their way of providing comfort for each other. If you’re not careful you can succumb to the power of the illusion. If you do so you shall surely die, because life cannot be sustained on a lie.

Many people are of the opinion that if most people believe a thing it must be true. However many do not consider the instruments they use to measure the truth, are simply not capable of reaching to the root. So how do you get to the truth, which many do not reach? When you discover life, live, when you get, give, when you learn, teach, when you need help, reach, when you hurt, share, when you love, care. When you become afraid, choose faith, instead of fear. We are all gods Kilo, such truth many are afraid to know. The god within you is powerless until he connects with the God of everything that is. Many are not connected to God but rather an idea they have been given, but the soul needs no buffer to the Living. Without God you cannot know the life you have been given. With love I leave you, and with love I will return. Make that connection to God and you will be amazed of the power you will learn.

Sincerely
Akil Johnson

The thing about my "story" or anyones "story" is that its an ever evolving one. People tend to make a habit of attempting to define each other by a particular event that happened in their lives, but it remains your choice whether you want to do that or not. My story is unfolding... and this article is about not allowing ourselves to be led by those who cannot see.... As far as the events which occurred in my childhood that "Random" is referring to from articles I wrote in the past, I discuss some other experiences that I never spoke up before in the book among others things.
