‘Let’s have a woman represent the 4th District’ – Hon Ralph T. O’Neal OBE

“We are asking you to give Ms Romney the chance, the opportunity to serve you, to ensure that as representative she will look after the affairs of the people,” said Honourable O’Neal speaking last night May 21, 2015 at the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) meeting held at the Bandstand in Road Town.
“I believe that Ms Romney will be a very good example in the country and I would like you to give her your vote,” he said.
According to the respected outgoing legislator, he was sure that persons will be surprised what will be done not in three and a half years but in four years, a reference to the National Democratic Party (NDP) which opted for early elections having served only three and a half years of a four year term and in so doing disenfranchising persons who would have turned 18 in a few months.
Honourable O’Neal said he feels Ms Romney would really be an angel for the Fourth District. “I am asking you to give her the vote.”
He said there are people in the Fourth District that need care and attention and that there is a need to meet the needs of many people in the territory who are willing to work.
“So we have to get people there in the House of Assembly who love people. You don’t wait until election time and then there are funerals filled up with people who you never see for a long time,” he said.
He said Ms Romney, like her father the late former Chief Minister Cyril B. Romney, is a personable and approachable person. “And we need that to take care of our people,” he said.
There needs to be more women in the council
Further, Hon O'Neal said that it will be good to get more women into the House of Assembly. “We want to get more women in the council. Getting some women in the council I believe will introduce better order because sometimes some of the men believe they could bawl out and that is bad. They must treat the House of Assembly like an honourable institution,” he said.
He said the time has come when the Fourth District should have a woman representing it and asked persons not to split the council by voting for some and not all of the VIP’s slate of At Large candidates.
Nice brown envelopes
Honourable O’Neal also said he hopes that the team of international observers coming to the territory for the elections understand some of the things that are happening in the territory.
“Because I heard about people getting nice brown envelopes of money and that is not true democracy. So we want to make sure that things are done [properly] and that on election night we are able to celebrate,” he said.
