BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI - Local businessman and horse racing icon Mr Lesmore Smith has announced his intention to run in the next general elections in the Virgin Islands, which is constitutionally due in 2027.

Smith was forced out of PVIM

Smith was previously announced as an At-Large candidate with the Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM) but was forced out of the party in 2023 after expressing his desire not to run in the Fifth District. At the time, he stated he would not run against Honourable Kye M. Rymer of the Virgin Islands Party.

During the 'Talking Points' programme on ZBVI 780 AM on April 13, 2026, Mr Smith shared that he was loyal to Honourable Kye M. Rymer and his late mother at that time. However, since his mother's passing, he told Honourable Rymer that he is currently “canvassing” in the Fifth District.

Independent candidate 'for now'

“I’m asking God for guidance with the election that is coming, and which party is not confirmed, and it is now I am an independent person. I am not afraid to stand alone, but I'm also happy to associate, but for now, I'm standing alone.”  Smith stated.

As a businessman and owner of a security firm in the Virgin Islands, Top Priority Security Service, Mr Smith has made significant contributions to the community, including a donation of an ambulance to Jost van Dyke in November 2025.

During the Talking Points programme,  he expressed that he is no stranger to the people of the Virgin Islands, adding that he believes if his voice is heard, it would be recognised.

'Different approach'

Smith acknowledged the challenges of running as an independent candidate. However, he stated, “ I don't mean I'll be independent the day in question. It could well be the Virgin Islands Party because I am a BVIsander, I have a right to defend, affiliate, and associate for the common good of the people.”

When asked if he is satisfied with the representation in the Fifth District, he responded, “I’m happy, but in reality, there are things I think that everybody has their own skill set. I can come with a different perspective and ensure that things shift a little differently. I'm not saying that Mr Rymer is not doing a good job. So I'm not saying I'm not happy with him, but I probably have a different approach.”

There’s the matter of character… because politics aside, people watching how you live and how you move. If a man could look his own mother in the eye and promise he wouldn’t run in her district, and then soon she gone, he turn around and do the exact thing. A man word is supposed to mean something, especially in his own family. If that foundation shaky, how we supposed to feel confident about promises made to a whole district? No trust.

I wonder what was the motive that he was against running
in the district where his mom risides?

So let we understand this properly… all these years you right there in the community, building your business, moving around, seeing the same people struggling, seeing the same young men and women trying to find a footing… and not once we hear about this “different skill set” you now talking about? Now election season come and suddenly you ready to step forward? Go sit down. If you had something meaningful to offer District 5, people woulda already know, they woulda already feel it in their everyday lives.

Let’s talk straight… twenty-five years in business is no small thing, but what really come out of it for the people around you? Were the young people you train and push forward? Where the locals you empower so they could rise up and take leadership roles? Because a real legacy ain’t just what you build for yourself, it’s what you build in others. District 5 people watching, and they asking simple questions… after all that time, who you really bring along? That “special skill set” sounding more like keeping control instead of creating opportunity. We don’t need gatekeepers, we need builders of people.

What is the salary that these elected officials get per year, since that would be their job now? I know it comes with good perks, travel, meetings, luncheons, and hotel stays. No, I am not interested in running. I'm just curious, since everyone wants in and stays in.

    Mr. Smith,

What approach will you do different? Hon. Kye is basically doing everything in his district. He has the track record to show. No ifs or buts. Hon. Kye loves the seniors and youths in his district. What have you done for the seniors and youths in district 5 throughout the years?

And the poor woman's wall break down from rain in Huntums Ghut and he didn't give her any assistance. Instead he gave the lady in the big white and green house a new walll. Advantage never done!! As Minister for works, he has not seen the deplorable condition of the roads. This country includes 9 districts. You can't be helping 5th alone and neglecting the roads of the Territory that tourists pass on daily.

I am in the 4th district, 2 votes already gone, 1 for Zoe, 1 for Ronnie, the next 3, waiting to decide..I am leaning towards giving Matha one...We just need people who care about people, who love people, who want to see people live good...The lack of water and the don't care approach to fix it, after 3 yrs Disturbs me , secondly the poor roads...We deserve better..

District 5 people don’t like dishonesty. We sticking with Kye. If you had intentions, say it from the beginning and stand firm. Don’t play both sides bigman.

Advantage never done mehson. Not all donations are good donations. Suss that ambulance and see what’s up. Beside that, the focus would be on horse racing and nothing else. Whether or not his staff are paid minimum wages while he reaps the profits of a cooked up story….more in the mortar…this election going be fun and dirty!
