BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI - Local businessman and horse racing icon Mr Lesmore Smith has announced his intention to run in the next general elections in the Virgin Islands, which is constitutionally due in 2027.

Smith was forced out of PVIM

Smith was previously announced as an At-Large candidate with the Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM) but was forced out of the party in 2023 after expressing his desire not to run in the Fifth District. At the time, he stated he would not run against Honourable Kye M. Rymer of the Virgin Islands Party.

During the 'Talking Points' programme on ZBVI 780 AM on April 13, 2026, Mr Smith shared that he was loyal to Honourable Kye M. Rymer and his late mother at that time. However, since his mother's passing, he told Honourable Rymer that he is currently “canvassing” in the Fifth District.

Independent candidate 'for now'

“I’m asking God for guidance with the election that is coming, and which party is not confirmed, and it is now I am an independent person. I am not afraid to stand alone, but I'm also happy to associate, but for now, I'm standing alone.”  Smith stated.

As a businessman and owner of a security firm in the Virgin Islands, Top Priority Security Service, Mr Smith has made significant contributions to the community, including a donation of an ambulance to Jost van Dyke in November 2025.

During the Talking Points programme,  he expressed that he is no stranger to the people of the Virgin Islands, adding that he believes if his voice is heard, it would be recognised.

'Different approach'

Smith acknowledged the challenges of running as an independent candidate. However, he stated, “ I don't mean I'll be independent the day in question. It could well be the Virgin Islands Party because I am a BVIsander, I have a right to defend, affiliate, and associate for the common good of the people.”

When asked if he is satisfied with the representation in the Fifth District, he responded, “I’m happy, but in reality, there are things I think that everybody has their own skill set. I can come with a different perspective and ensure that things shift a little differently. I'm not saying that Mr Rymer is not doing a good job. So I'm not saying I'm not happy with him, but I probably have a different approach.”

So let we understand this properly… all these years you right there in the community, building your business, moving around, seeing the same people struggling, seeing the same young men and women trying to find a footing… and not once we hear about this “different skill set” you now talking about? Now election season come and suddenly you ready to step forward? Go sit down. If you had something meaningful to offer District 5, people woulda already know, they woulda already feel it in their everyday lives.
