ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Sunday April 14, 2013 saw a well attended and fun morning out in Virgin Gorda for the BVI Mountain Bike Club’s 12th annual Mineshaft Challenge on Virgin Gorda.

The race from the Mineshaft Cafe, through Spanish town, past Nail Bay and then up the long hot climb of Gorda Peak and then back to the Mineshaft, attracted 20 adults racers, all of which finished the full course.

The race was won by Phillipe Leroy who was in a class of his own with a new course record of 63 minutes. Other notable performances were from VG resident, Anghel George, who rode a strong race to finish 1st in the Veteran Division and 2nd overall in 83 minutes and Tom Clipstone who rounded out the podium finishers in a time of 84 minutes.

In the ladies category, Kim from VG and Carolina Pettigrew had a good dual again, this time Kim winning out.

And special mention is Mark Jones who did very well to take on and finish the full course in his first race, this being one of the harder races of the MTB season.

Eight (8) cadets also took part, riding a shorter, challenging but safe course which proved highly successful and competitive. Caitlin Jones came first in the Under 6 age group, Noah Cottreau led home the U-7’s, whilst in the U-8’s Tai Thomas held off the spirited Gethin Jones to claim top spot. William Clipstone came home third.

The 9-11 age group saw a tough battle between Derek Pettigrew and Juohn Cullimore which eventually went the way of Pettigrew. Cullimore came second and Anghel George third.

Jude Kinkead took top honours in the Junior section.

More information will be released in due course by the MTB on how to register and purchase tickets.

Last year, 182 people made the trip and the organizers are hopeful of attracting a similar number this year. ”So tell your friends about the trip, even if they do not want to race. We are making some interesting changes to the course this year which we will advise nearer the time, and there will be plenty of options for those who may not wish to ride the full course. There will also be a full program of cadet races on the day.”
