According to the stables co-owner, Mr Rodney Simmons, the five-year-old stallion was purchased some three weeks ago and has been going through its paces under the watchful eyes of veteran exercise jockey, David A. Campbell aka Jamdown at Ellis Thomas Downs.
Speaking with Virgin Islands News Online, Campbell explained that the horse has already been showing good signs of progress, “He runs really smooth [and has] put on a lot of weight since he first came,” he said.
Campbell related that the horse, which was purchased out of Florida in the United States, is expected to have its first outing within the next few weeks at the upcoming Labour Day races scheduled for St Croix, US Virgin Islands on September 8, 2013.
Tortola’s very own East End Tap previously won the feature 1-1/16 mile race of the Labour Day event at the Randall ‘Doc’ James racetrack in 2010.
The Boys stables also has another power horse in Broken Home, which recently won the feature race of the pre-Father’s Day event at Ellis Thomas Downs on June 2, 2013.
Leave it to Bern is seen as a welcome addition to the steadily depleting fold of horses in the Virgin Islands.
