Learning Math & Science fun @ St George's Primary

The fair displayed creations by students of all levels of the school and the theme was to show how Mathematics and Science could be taught in an engaging and fun manner.
Speaking to this news site during a brief visit, Principal of the school Claudette A. Landover said the fair is being used as an opportunity for the students to put into practice the lessons they learnt in the classroom.
“We find that teaching math in abstract ways doesn’t work and children sometimes don’t like math, so what we are trying to do is show different means of how math can be fun so we had students design different strategies and games and so on to interactively teach math and help them to reinforce concepts they would have learnt in class,” she said.
Landover added that parents were streaming in to the school to view the projects done by the children and that it was going smoothly.
“It is a great experience for everyone and we have projects displayed from pre-kindergarten up to grade 6,” she said. “We are discussing how other schools could use similar initiatives to help teach their children math and science. It is the first time we are doing the math fair; we had always had the science fair,” she said, adding that they have an integrated way of teaching the various subjects at the school.
Tatiana Fahie, a Grade 5 student of St George’s Primary School, walked our reporter through almost all of the exhibits while explaining how each of them were meant to function with regards to making math and science exciting to learn.
“Math is fun, but you have to keep your head in the game so that you would understand and that’s why these games are used in math classes, and not only math classes but science classes,” she said.
She explained how some of the innovative exhibits could help students learn about fractions and percentages. “Some of them can even teach the younger students how to count,” she said, pointing to some of the interactive games created by the students. “We don’t want our students to fall asleep in class because it does happen at times,” she said, emphasising the need for the games to be interactive and fun.
