FAT HOGS BAY, Tortola, VI- Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has given his opinion as to what he believes a good leader is, after claiming that politicians are sometimes the main reason why changes needed in the Virgin Islands are not seen.

Honourable Wheatley was speaking on Tola Radio VI on Monday, September 23, 2024, when he addressed the Public Service Management Bill 2024 recently passed in the House of Assembly with amendments.

“Politicians themselves in a fight for power won’t educate the people about the real problems. So, it’s more advantageous for me [or someone] who is in the opposition to be able to say well the problem we have is really the people we have in power now, if you remove them, you solve the problem,” he said.

Premier Wheatley continued that this does not work but keeps the Territory stuck in a back-and-forth and the problems persist.

Leaders willing to ‘fix deficiencies’ needed- Premier Wheatley

For the VI to truly move forward with these changes, the Premier said he believes leaders who recognise the “flaws and deficiencies” in the system and are willing to fix them are needed.

He added that leaders must be compassionate and hear the cries of the people, have love for them and want to help them.

Another quality of a good leader, the Premier said, is skills. “They could read, they could write, they could articulate themselves, they relate to anybody in society… Those are the types of skills you need; you need to be able to go to the House of Assembly and have the ability to make good laws,” Premier Wheatley explained.

This must be Hollywood: a good leader can read and write????. His very ancestors couldn't read and write as well as he can but they sure were better leaders than he is.

Wheatley: “ leaders must be compassionate and hear the cries of the people, have love for them and want to help them”
Question: Given the state of the Territory, what evidence is there that Mr. Wheatley and other so called BVI leaders hear the cries of the people?

A common definition of a leader is, “ A leader is a guiding or directing head of a group, one who leads towards a new direction after critical analysis of social, economic and political condition of the group, the leader would then develop a plan with strategies to take them to a better place.” —-Dr. Claud Anderson. Have our Virgin Islands leaders measured ? In deciding to run for elected office to lead the Virgin Islands(British) and during the political campaign, have leaders measured up? Whose fault is it have our leaders may not be measuring up? The people. And why have they not?

The Premier mentioned leadership but not management. Perhaps it was implied. Well, “leadership and management are two halves of the same coin. You cannot be a good manager without being a successful leader and vice versa(Vince Meconi).” A good leader has vision for his/her organization, sets the tone, and lead by example, demonstrates the right style( positive attitude, energetic, mentally tough, reliable, informal, not petty), etc.

Furthermore, is more about behavior than skill. Words in action speaks far greater than the words spoke or words in print. What is spoken or written on a paper is not as important as how one behave every day. Followers, the people one looks back see, will see and take cues from one’s day-to-day behavior. Politics is about self interest, not public interest, regrettably. It is rare for politicians to public interest before self-interest. Nevertheless, it is human to act in one’s self-interest. Can our local leaders/politicians buck the trend of putting self-interest ahead of public interest? Is local leadership an oxymoron?

Correction: “ Furthermore, is more about behavior than skill.” …should read ‘ Furthermore, leadership is more about behavior than skill.

@GateKeeper, you have done a semester’s level of work in a few minutes in a blog. The management science gurus will probably be satisfied, thrilled.,With STEM/STEAM, management science often gets sidelined. Nevertheless, effective leadership is needed to effectively drive organizations. Globalization is replacing blue collar workers;Robots, white collar workers. AI is bursting on the scene but have not yet replace Top organizations leadership. Top leadership is needed and must prove they are still needed..” Words in action speaks far greater than the words spoke or words in print.” This is spot on. Flinging around power and control is not good or ideal leadership, especially if no one is following,,and one is bleeding followers..leadership is not an inherited trait,,it comes about with education, hands on experience,,working closely with and being mentored by seasoned, proven effective leaders. Too many want to be the Top Dog without laboring through the sausage making,; they want to leap to the top without doing the work, the time.

[Let’s lead like eagles, not careen off the cliff like buffaloes]

    To Little And Too Late.

Honestly, Hon. Premier, Dr. Natalio Sujande Wheatley, you are a good show-talker, but not honestly a good political Leader for the people of the BVI. Good leadership leads by example.
Moreover, a good leader submit self to higher authorities, the people of the BVI and the UK, when they have proven that they are right in their recommended advice.
    You are stubborn-head self-righteous leader,
    who not good for us.
A good leader is first a good follow of GOD, our Creator, WHO IS GOOD, and those that are following in the WAY OF RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Sowande can't tie the laces on Myron's shoes. Got back again. We have also had leaders not as well spoken in terms of words as our now Premier is but they had common sense.

I would vote for a weal Lorna any day over a false, fake Karmala. Lorna is much more confident, speaks better and much genuine...Anybody watching Karmala and listening to her thinks that she is capable is a simmer..Myron and Sowande would embarrass Karmala out do her. That's the quality of our politicians..They just need to stop been greedy, think they art and selfish
