ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– Describing himself as professional, knowledgeable, efficient and a passionate fighter for the Virgin Islands (VI), local attorney Daniel F. Davies has entered the 2023 elections race as an Independent At Large candidate.

Davies in an open letter published on March 23, 2023, said over the years he has contributed to the Virgin Islands by conducting a number of legal cases and providing legal advice at little or no cost, in addition to assisting in the clean-up of small businesses in the aftermath of the August 2017 floods and his contributions to the discussions of the recovery and redevelopment plans of VI following Hurricane Irma.

VI Youth Advocate

Further, Davies said he was actively involved in fighting to ensure that the local democracy was not hindered by a partial suspension of the Constitution amongst other issues, following the Commission of Inquiry (CoI).

He added that part of his reason for now wanting to be a part of the Virgin Islands House of Assembly is to address issues such as social justice, access to justice, strengthening constitutional rights, fixing the local economy and providing better opportunities for the youth.

“If elected, I will push for higher wages, the creation of a legal aid clinic as a statutory body, the provision of opportunities for our youth both locally and abroad, fight to ensure that everyone in the country is treated fairly and that it is less expensive and tiresome to do business within the Virgin Islands,” he added.

Overhaul of the banking system

Davies said other issues in the VI that need addressing are a lack of fairness within the local banking system as it relates to how customers are treated, their ability to access financing and the glaring lack of proper banking facilities in our sister islands.

“We must put in place regulations to specifically deal with how banks treat their customers. We must also do whatever is necessary to ensure that the people of the Virgin Islands have ready access to capital and that our sister islands have proper and easy access to banking services,” he added.

Davies also plans to address issues relating to access to media services and equipment on the sister islands.

As a practicing lawyer, Mr Davies said the lack of access to justice is a major issue in VI as the cost of obtaining a lawyer is quite high.

“Access to justice is a human right. A publicly funded legal aid clinic is a must to ensure that every member and every economic level of our community will be able to exercise their rights,” he detailed.

Campaign launch date to come

Mr Davies said his 2023 campaign launch will happen in the coming days.

“I look forward to interacting with you throughout and after the campaign season. If you see me on the street, let us have a conversation about how we can improve our country.”

Mr Davies is a Managing Partner of Silk Legal (BVI) Inc.

He was called to the Bar in 2016.

He said in this one interview more than all of the rest put together about helping the BVI in a positive way. He isn't backbiting or tearing down others to make himself look good. He is talking about clear problems that none of the others are touching. He is one of the young breaths of fresh air that we need. Let's wait and see. I wish him success in the upcoming elections.

Excellent - the future of BVI politics lies in getting away from one-party dominance. With enough truly independent candidates elected, we can stop the shenanigans. If we get Chad George in D1, Daniel at large, Perline Scatliffe-Leonard at large, and Rosita Scatliffe-Thompson in D4, the government will have to work in the best interests of the people. Fraser will win in D3 and the best the other parties will get is 3 or 4 people. That's it folks - no controlling majority, and our elected reps will have to work together and do the job they were supposed to be doing all along - make a better BVI for all a we.

He runs the law firm that advised the Esteemed to apply for an injunction against the CoI but forgot to tell the Esteemed that he could only bring such a claim with the consent of the AG - the bad advice cost the Esteemed over $100k.

@help us all - you sound like you had a run in with the law being on the wrong side and Daniel was the lawyer of the person that you went up against and lost the court case. Your lawyer wasn’t no match for him so you live in fear of him. Ya with Daniel we will be cleaning up the place from people like you

@ YeS! Please keep the racism out of this. We are moving along as a civilized country, where small-minded comments like your last sentence are not needed. I will vote for Daniel Davies as well, and hope people see his character and qualifications and not his colour, or lack of it, as a criterion.

I have known Daniel F. Davies for about 4 years I think that out of all whom in running he is the best man for Premier but he won’t get it because he is up against a bunch of people who would like someone for Premier who they can get handouts from. This guy has a passion for the BVI I found that out the first time I met him he will be good for the BVI.

Please note the following on Government's website:

      https://bvi.gov.vg/qualifications-membership

A person may also be qualified to stand for election if they were qualified to stand under the previous Constitution.

The restrictions under the earlier constitution were much more relaxed (a person only needed to be a Belonger, over the age of 21, and resident and domiciled in the British Virgin Islands), and preserving them was intended to preserve the right of any sitting members of the House from accidentally being disqualified. However, the wording used suggests that any person who was so qualified on the day the 2007 constitution came into effect remains so qualified (i.e. any Belonger who was born before 1986 and was resident and domiciled in the British Virgin Islands on the date the 2007 constitution came into effect).

Man looketh at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart!
Can you see the true intent of an individual? If you want to catch flies, just use honey. That's what too many of us flies are looking for this talking season. Sing the right tune and it's you I want. Do you honestly think many of these aspiring politians have no hidden agenda? Think again! For some, it's power, others it's 'I've been poor too long and it's time to be rich'. As for me, I'm looking for fear of God, (and YES there is a God just like there is wind!), and consistancy 'for a double-minded man is unstable in all his ways'.
Virgin Islanders it's time to put God first and ask him to help us choose wisely.

A native Virgin Islander to the Nth generation!

His father is from East End, Sam Davies, ex Fisheries Officer. His mother who has Serendipity Bookshop is from Wales, both sets of her grandparents were from Russia where they had to leave owing to the pogroms against Jews in 1880. Russians were not slave owners. Daniel is as white as Buddha. Buddha has a white father and Daniel a white mother. He is not white to the trust companies or those who like to only deal with other whites, his 50% drop excludes him from that society.
