ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Landowners in the Virgin Islands (VI) have been asked to pay-up their 2020 property tax which is due to the Inland Revenue Department between September 1 to November 30, 2020.

However, for persons who may have objections on the amounts owed, a court meeting is set for Friday, October 9, 2020, at 10:00 am where a Magistrate will listen to objections on the 2020 assessment of the property.

To find out how much is owed, individuals can visit the Government Information Service website or a number of public buildings where a list has been published with the information.

“The Property Tax list includes the name(s) of proprietor(s) and the amount of tax due. The list which comprises the registration sections can be viewed at various public buildings throughout the Territory, including the R.T. O'Neil Central Administration Complex and the Inland Revenue Department offices on Tortola and Virgin Gorda,” a release for the Inland Revenue Department noted.

Interest if amounts not paid

In addition, persons can also visit the District Offices on Anegada and Jost van Dyke for information on the amounts owed via the property tax list.

The Inland Revenue Department, however, warned that failure to pay the 2020 Property Tax during the period, will attract interest being charged at a rate of twenty per cent per annum.

“Owners should also pay or arrange a payment schedule with the Inland Revenue Department to liquidate any outstanding Property Tax. Legal transactions are not processed for “Stamp Duty” purposes unless the tax relating to the parcel is paid.”

Due to restrictions with COVID-19, the court meeting scheduled for October 9, 2020, will be conducted via zoom meeting only.

I reported a person who has not paid property taxes since 2003! I was told that there is no recourse until they decided to sell their property . Totally out of their hands. They told me the govt has no system in process to address this. Do you have any clue how much money the govt is losing in revenue! I do t get it. And this person has the ability financially to,pay they just think the laws do t apply to them. I give up priorities are totally screwed up .

Been like that for years. Paid mine Thursday. There was a man looking through the list for FORTY properties he THOUGHT he owned. These taxes are far too low anyway, have not been changed for years. Why do people think that because their ancestors were given land by the estate owners that they shouldn't have to pay tax? How do they think government can provide services without tax income? Probably the same people who dont pay over theirs employees taxes.

Most of these people with big apartments haven't paid for years but they're squeezing the little man.
IRD put them on payment plans when they want a loan from the bank, they get the loan and never look back to pay anything

Imagine Inland Revenue increasing people property tax during a pandemic. The whole world has been affected by this pandemic and Inland Revenue is showing no sympathy.

No consideration for persons who have lost their jobs
No consideration for persons who are working only three days a week
No consideration for persons who cannot afford to pay their mortgage
You ask me everyone needs to object.

Where is the government in all this?

Ask the short man from West, the commissioner doesn't know a thing that goes on in that office.
He does what he wants because she is blind to the world

UK DOES NOT pay for wretched gus rent

WE give the state owned property to him & his family

We even pay for his only black servants.

Clear many here don’t have a clue where their state money is going.

Taxing people for existing is not christian. It is not moral to tax life. Nor does the government own the people and I commend the government for keeping land tax low.
