Laid off YCCS staff still not paid as 'promised'
In excess of 20 workers were given letters of termination Friday, April 29 as YCCS commenced their several months of closure for renovation. Premier Dr The Hon D. Orlando Smith had acknowledged receiving reports about the closure of YCCS but said he did not have a “detailed conversation” with its management at the time.
However, yesterday, June 28, 20016, this news site was braced with calls from several of the workers who claimed that they were told in a meeting with the company’s senior management that they were going to be paid for the period that the company was being closed for. But to date, not a penny has been forthcoming.
“We keep asking the operations manager what is going on, when and if we are going to be paid as promised and he never know, anything we ask him he never know,” said one of the laid off employees.
Difficulty securing jobs
Adding insult to injury, as claimed by some of the workers, they are having difficulties securing jobs as they are being told their situation is not like that of the laid off Rosewood Little Dix workers. “We can’t get jobs because the employers are saying that we are already being paid so they can’t employ us and we are getting a tough time out here with not knowing if indeed we will be paid,” said a female employee.
“Would you believe that not a single government authority came to say a thing to us? Not because most of us are expats that they have to treat us this way. They ran up and down to the Little Dix employees but what about us? Where is our District Representative? We too contribute significantly to this economy. Show us that you appreciate us not treat us like dogs,” another female added as she further said, “We are like sheep waiting to be slaughtered.”
This news site made several attempts to reach the management of YCCS and the Ninth District Representative Dr The Honourable Hubert O’Neal with no success.
Only 2 YCCS employees approached Help Desk
Speaking during the Ninth Sitting of the First Session of the Third House of Assembly on June 23, 2016, Premier Dr The Honourable D. Orlando Smith, in response to a question asked by Opposition Leader Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3), said only two of the laid off YCCS employees have so far visited the Help Desk set up to find jobs for those affected by the layoffs on Virgin Gorda.
“To date we are not aware of the number of YCCS employees who were affected that have found new employment.”
Premier Smith also said that Government records show that eight of the employees that were laid off left the territory or returned to their native land.
Failing of VI economy
Leader of the Opposition, Honourable Julian Fraser RA (R3) said the closure of Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) from June 1, 2016 represented "a failing of the Virgin Islands economy" When he posted on his official Facebook page on Saturday April 30, 2016.
