ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has congratulated Kyron A. McMaster for his historic feat at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

McMaster, the reigning Commonwealth Games Champion, captured a silver medal in the final of the Men’s 400m Hurdles, on August 23, 2023, beating the 2nd and 3rd fastest men ever in that event along his way to the podium finish.

It is the first-ever medal for the VI at the World Championships.

“Let me take this opportunity to congratulate Mr Kyron McMaster who has made the nation proud by delivering to us our greatest sporting accomplishment in the history of the Virgin Islands,” Premier Wheatley stated at a press conference regarding the just concluded 2023 Virgin Islands Emancipation today, August 24, 2023.

Celebration & reward!

Premier Wheatley said the people of the Virgin Islands watched as McMaster achieved a historic feat and it “made us tremendously proud.”

He said the VI is now looking forward to Mr McMaster returning to the Virgin Islands “so we can celebrate him and reward him in the way that he truly deserves and we are looking forward to building on his success.”

It is unclear what plans the VI has for McMaster; however, it is expected he will be rewarded with $30, 000, which is the Government’s policy for anyone capturing silver at the World Championships.

The Premier also took the opportunity to congratulate all the athletes who made up the VI team in Budapest. They are sprinters Rikkoi A.R. Brathwaite and Adaejah T. Hodge.

Say you is looking forward to giving him our tax money not the Vi. All we get out of this is more tax on our shoulders. Y'all keep up this nonsense taking the people for fools.

Why is bvi being called a nation? The bvi is a territory!

If only this premier took as much pride in our country as our athletes, we would be better off. Mr Premier are you proud of our roads, electricity, water, schools and healthcare?

I hope they give him land or property also in the Virgin Islands with that $30,000.00. Last time I recall a female athlete receiving land and he deserves the same and more. All our athletes deserves the same awards and benefits.

I am disappointed with the statement by Herbs Power. This is our country and whatever our people do to make us proud we must celebrate with them. The Premier's announcement of a celebration for Mr. Mc Master is quite appropriate because it will serve as an incentive for others to go out there and perform for the glory of this country. What Kyron did for this country is no easy feat, because he was competing against the best in the world, and we must put aside politics and think big. If the Premier give him a gift from the Treasury, I don't see any problem with that. The roads will be repaired in due time. The Virgin Islands is not the only country with bad roads, I am sure there are bad roads in the United States and Britain and the people live with them. Come we have to put aside pettiness.

Now the government should fix the
public playgroundsf like the one at Queen Elizabeth Park , long time overdue, and start putting some funds into sports facilities where the kids of the BVI can emulate their hero athletes of the territory.

Yes, we should all be proud of this young man. When will we be able to be proud of our government's performance both locally and internationally? When will we be able to be proud of our infrastructure and salaries? When?
