"Keep the people informed and in the mix"- Bertrand Lettsome
“Keep the people informed and in the mix. Give it your best shot”, were the few words of advice Mr. Lettsome, who retired from the public service after 27 years on September 10, 2011, had for the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) Government. The NDP emerged victorious 9-4 at the November 7 General Elections with the Virgin Islands Party holding on to 4 seats.
Meanwhile, Mr. Lettsome, said he was encouraged with the amount of votes that he received and expressed appreciation to all the persons that voted for him and encouraged him during his short campaign. He also vowed to continue to work for the people and with the people.
The son of the late Legislator Terrence B. Lettsome received 476 votes, which positioned him 11th out of the 16 At Large candidates.
Mr. Lettsome had described his decision to enter politics as a calling that he was heeding to. “When I look at my whole life, seems like my life prepare me and this is the direction life has taken me. I come up under my linage, Francis Lettsome is my grandfather, my father Terrence Lettsome, I grew up in that kind of environment. Coming out of high school here in 1979 I was a valedictorian, I got an education [tertiary overseas] and came back serving for these 27 years.
“A lot of time from frustration and not being able to see a lot of things, not being done and not getting implemented seems like a logical step, like a preparation God has been preparing me. I think I have the qualification, I think I have the experience in terms of Government and have been part of a lot of the solutions, studies, reports etc, … so it’s like a job opening since September 13, so I am just putting out my application for an opportunity to serve at the next level,” Mr. Lettsome had told Virgin Islands News Online in an exclusive interview on September 15, 2011.
The former CFD chief had also said he was not ruling out the possibility of joining a party although he wanted to remain an independent heading to the recent polls noting that he was willing to work with anyone who was willing to “put God first, then people, then the country and that have to be above party and above self, we have to be able to work together”.
