JVD residents condemn dangerous road

Several residents of the sister island of Jost Van Dyke spoke with Virgin Islands News recently and said that the damaged roadway has been a threat to life and limb for as long as they could remember.
One JVD taxi driver told this news site, “Make sure you get a good look at that and put it on the news good, that thing is dangerous and it [has] been there for twelve years or more now.”
Another resident of Jost Van Dyke, Gregory A. Callwood, related that road users are often required to tread cautiously on the other side of the damaged roadway, lest they end up off the road. This in itself, poses a danger to the free movement of traffic along the road.
Although the roadside is fitted with a guard rail and traffic cones, the danger of imminent death lurks in times of low visibility or for any driver or road user who has no knowledge of the damaged area. The underside of the road appeared significantly eroded and contained many cracks when this news site visited.
Residents were also upset that the road was not made a priority for repairs even though contracts have been issued and effected for infrastructural repairs at other locations on the island.
Additional reports indicate that a contractor has been identified for the repair of the damaged roadway but it is unclear when works are expected to start or the cost of the proposed repairs.
Efforts to contact Second District Representative Hon. J. Alvin Christopher and Works Minister Hon. Mark H. Vanterpool for comments on the issue proved unsuccessful up to post time.
