ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – In dominant style the Virgin Island Volleyball Association Power League Men’s and Women’s B Division Championships were won in straight sets on Saturday May 14, 2016, by Jus Dream and the VG Eagles respectively in the Multi Purpose Sports Complex.

First up and in front of a raucous “home” crowd, the VG Eagles, who were only playing on the beach for fun last year, completed their unbeaten season, in which they haven’t lost a set, with a 3-0 win over the Vixens.

The first set was tight, 25-22, but from then the Eagles took control of the match and won the next two sets 25-15, 25-14, to become champions.

Daphne Sprauve had 10 Aces, Ana Cera 6, Lyra George 3 and Yvette Harley 4 Kills.

For the Vixens, Shermin James had 5 Aces and 3 Kills.

Eagles’ reaction

Head Coach, Raymond Fonseca, was a very happy man with the win for his girls. “I’m very proud of the team, we only came together in January to play in this league and we haven’t lost a set. They worked hard, played great as a team and deserve to be champions.”

Next Season the Eagles, according to Fonseca, will become two teams, with representation in the “A” Division as well as a team still playing in the “B” Division.

Lyra George, the Club President and key player, was also pleased with the win. “We are a young, awesome team; we kept together, came to win and did just that. Fighting hard not to lose a set throughout the season was also a goal we had and that is pleasing too.”

George also noted that it was great to see so many Fans from Virgin Gorda come down to the MPSC to watch. “When we played in Virgin Gorda the Gym was full, but down here there is not the same atmosphere, so hopefully there will be more and more games over on VG next season. It was awesome though to hear our fans shouting and cheering us on tonight.”

Best Attacker Award went to Sue Brown of the Vixens, Most Blocks, Shaunice Leonard, Best Server Daphne Sprauve and Best Setter Debbie Ridgeway.

The MVP was Yvette Harley of Eagles.

Just Dream cruise to Men’s Championship

Jus Dream were equally as dominant in a somewhat one sided Men’s Championship when they cruised to a straight sets win over Raw Power, 25-12, 25-19, 25-16.

For Jus Dream, Canice Marquis had 15 Kills and 5 Digs, Curtis Davis 5 Blocks, Willis Potter 4 Aces and 4 Digs, Travis Jack 6 Kills and Andre Pickering 5.

The Raw Power team was led by 3 Kills, 3 Blocks and 3 Digs by Sherwin Modoc, whilst Louis Callwood had 4 Digs, Edson Boyea also 4 and Leon Smith with 6 Kills.

Drexel Glasgow, who had 4 Kills, 3 Blocks and 3 Digs for Jus Dream, commented that his team had a game plan and they stuck to it. “We stuck to what we wanted to do best and despite a little rough patch in the second set, came through comfortably. We thought Raw Power would have been more competitive, but then again we dominated them and didn’t give them a chance to get into the game.”

Best Attacker was Paul Mourillon, Best Blocker Curtis Davis, Best Server, Setter and MVP Willis Potter.
