ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Premier and Minister of Finance Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) said the Junior Ministers, Hon Shereen D. Flax-Charles and Hon Sharie B. De Castro will soon have the expertise of Special Advisors.

Addressing the topic during a press conference held on February 25, 2022, he said the Special Advisors, formerly called Ministerial Political Advisors, have been selected.

“Special Advisors for the two Junior Ministers have been selected and the appointments will be made in a few days so that our Junior Ministers can get the support to continue delivering as the load of their responsibilities increases,” he remarked.

He said the Jr Ministers conducted their own interviews and selected their Special Advisors.

He also said these roles should be occupied by persons who are competent, persons who understand the essence of time, and should not be just friends of the ministers.

Two advisors already filled for Premier

The Territory’s leader also informed that he has two of his three Special Advisors. They are Mr. Kevin ‘OJ’ Smith and Mr. Sunil Ramjitsingh.

“There is one more special advisor to be approved for the Premier and based on the nature of the work that has to be done, we are looking for someone with expertise in Constitutional Law and drafting of legislation just to name a few areas.”

He added: “This is in an effort to help us to continue to assist our already hard-working public officers to push even harder to get the work of the people done in an even more timely, effective and transparent manner. It is all about the people, their needs and their aspirations being met especially during these difficult times.”

He again insisted that this is not a new post but one that is more clearly defined and their pay will come from the already allocated funds that have been budgeted per ministry for consultants.

The Premier then urged suitable persons to apply for these posts as each Minister is allowed to have a Special Advisor.

If you run for politics I take it for granted that you feel that you have the capabilities to run a ministry. If you know that you are not capable well don’t run! Simple! In all my years I know perm sec and heads of departments are the ones to do the leg work. Why in Heaven’s name do we need advisors in this little 2 by 4 island with 30000 people which is considered the population of a university!!!!

When we voted for these people we did that because we thought they are capable. We never had advisors on our mind..

Junior Ministers( Ministry or Department Portfolio)
    Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture
    Ministry of Tourism
    Ministry of Social Development
    Ministry of Culture and Awareness

No need to be no darn Advisors. This is blatant foolishness . Give the Females elected the opportunity to carry out their representation within the Administration in a Leadership capacity. One year into the next Election here but appointing Advisors.( lame excuse and an insult) not everyone is that naiive.

And who will these advisors advise after the next general election? Why are these appointments being made at the end of the current term of office? Or is it the intention that any newly elected persons to these offices be stuck with an "opponent" advisor until the advisor's contract expires. Or is it that newly elected persons will just pay out on the existing contract and hire persons of their choice once elected? Would the budget be adjusted for this? Just need to know.
