Jr Ministers step up as Education & Health Ministers out of territory

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Junior Ministers Hons Karl Dawson (R1) and Luce D. Hodge-Smith (R4) are currently acting in the posts of Minister for Health and Social Development, and Minister for Education, Youth Affairs and Sports, respectively, as the subject ministers are currently out of the territory.

Minister for Health and Social Development, Honourable Vincent O. Wheatley (R9) is currently away from the Territory on personal leave till November 14, 2023.

Minister for Education, Youth Affairs and Sports, Honourable Sharie B. De Castro (AL) is currently away from the Territory on duty travel until November 20, 2023.

According to Government Information Service (GIS) today, November 10, 2023, during the period November 9 – 11, Honourable de Castro will be attending the CXC Third Annual Ministerial Summit in Barbados.

Busy month of travel for Hons de Castro

For the period November 11 – 16, Hon de Castro will be attending the 42nd UNESCO General Conference in Paris; and for the period November 16 – 19, she will be attending the First UKOTA Overseas Territories Youth Summit and the UK Youth Parliament in London. 

The appointment of the Junior Ministers to act as Ministers is in accordance with section 52 (2) of the Virgin Islands Constitution Order, 2007 where the Governor, acting in accordance with the advice of the Premier, shall by instrument under Public Seal appoint Ministers from among the elected members of the House of Assembly.

    It seems as though we have elected a set of professional tourists. Our leaders are always off to foreign countries but we can’t see improvement in our territory. At least four ministers are out of the territory. I wonder if it is necessary and how much it costs taxpayers. I am tired of shaking my head.
