ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – They have been “prepped” on good work ethics, communications skills, work place ethics, and now applicants under the Youth Unemployment Register (YUR) will have the opportunity to present themselves to potential employers at a Job and Career Fair on Thursday, February 9, 2012 at the Multi- Purpose Sports Complex.

In light of this, Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Myron Walwyn is appealing to businesses to be part of the Fair to facilitate registrants from the YUR, which will allow them to engage with prospective employers in finding work opportunities.

“A number of businesses have already come forward to offer jobs to these young people, and I thank you for exercising sound corporate citizenship. We now need the support of a larger cross section of our business community to join this effort,” Hon. Walwyn charged.

In his plea to the business community, the Education Minister pointed out that owning businesses in the Virgin Islands (VI) come with the responsibility of training youths and assisting Virgin Islanders in realising their professional aspirations.

“When our youths are productively engaged it sets the stage for thriving communities that filters into social, educational, and economical aspects of our lives, our Territory,” Hon. Walwyn further stated.

The Minister also noted that in his personal interaction with the registrants, he realised that “they are prepared to take on work challenges as they are now aware of their role in advancing the Territory”.

“The VI stands to gain a cohort of eager and gainfully employed young people. Their energy and talents will be needed to advance our economy as they provide the necessary labour that can be trained to fit our organisations, culture and add to its goals,” Hon. Walwyn added.

Over the past week and a half, registrants have been attending work readiness seminars aimed at matching youths with best suited jobs based on their aspirations and personalities, promote good work ethic, understand appropriate work behaviour and teach youths the confidence needed to win any employer.

The training sessions, which conclude today February 3, 2012, were facilitated by Judith Vanterpool and Albert Wheatley. The sessions covered customer service, team building skills, personality profiling and effective communication between colleagues, supervisors and managers.

@release - it is time for you to release that negative spirit and adapt some positivity. The words you release in the atmosphere has power(death and life is in the power of the tongue). Send forth positives and we will indeed receive same. This is what has kept us down for so long, everytime somebody puts a step forward to do something positive, we are so quick to condemn and criticize. Instead let us turn a new leaf just as we have turned a new year and embrace a new attitude to escalate positive thought processes in our society. We win victories beginning with our mind that is why the word of God encourages us to daily renew our minds.

I applaud the efforts that are being made to assist our youths in finding meaningful employment. What i do not like is that the Multi-Sports facility should not be used for this. The multi sports complex MUST be used for sports for our youths but is too often closed for conferences, beauty pageants, graduations etc. We have the Sir Rupert hall next door which is for these kind of events. Please promote the use of the sports facility for what it was designed for - Sports!

It is a Sports Complex, but pay close attention to the word "MULTI-PURPOSE".

It is a Multi purpose sports complex (if you want to take two words why "sports" + "Complex"- not a venue for non sporting events and church business. That is what the building next door is for. Sports are an important of youth development and this venue needs to be used for that purpose, right now it is underutilised and used for the wrong things.

struuupes, you just don't make no sense and wasting time blogging you will be idiotic. I guess yuh vex because they also used the MULTIPURPOSE BUILDING for the first sitting of the legislative council some weeks backs, strrruuupes By the way, that event was spectacular and could not be held in a better place which accomodated sooo many well dressed people. I guess "good and bad" probably would have felt better if they had held it in the HOT cultural center or the breeze way of the Admin Bldg, while the MULTIPURPOSE BUILDING sat there closed up waiting for some sport to take place. Well sah, what idiots!!!

Thats the whole point! Why is it sitting there empty? Why are there not programs after programs being run in there? Why are the schools not utilising this building during schol hours? Why? Why? Why? We have a facility there that is not being used properly, if used properly it can generate revenue, keep the kids off the streets and increase our ability to play various sports on the international stage. So yes i ask again, why is this facility not being used properly?

Maybe you can see if the UK Army is interested in the youths service. Have them (UK Army personnel) come to the BVI and give some insights on what the Army has to offer. They can learn a lot from the British Army as well. They are medical services, marine services, aircraft services, IT services etc in the Army. Think about it as an alternative people.

I sure all the youths who need work permits are employed. Most Employers in the Virgin Islands simple do not want to hire locals. Look at the amount of imported labour, they don't even have to come here looking for a job, employers are sourcing them directly from their country. It has nothing to do with skills for the most part, because most persons from the other Caribbean islands who are employed here do not have a high school certificate, many only had up to primary education, yet they are employed. They had no prior expereince either, yet they are here employed. Wake up, the hardest person to find a job in the Virgin Islands is a Virgin Islander. I know someone from SVG who son just move to the Virgin Islands , he is no more than 18 and he done got a job.

To fix this problem, STOP renewing work permits and put a freeze on new work permit except for professionals who have needed skills that are not available locally. There are local persons who can fill the job of Cashier, Sales Clerk, Waiter, Gas Station Attendent, Security Guard, Cook, Secretary, Filing Clerk, Receptionist, Messenger, Ticket Agent, etc.
