‘JJ’ crowned FLOW Soca Monarch
JJ won with a total of 449 points while second place went to B’More who had 447 points while third was Teejay with 342.
Best Performance went to King Verse of St Maarten.
The Soca King’s first decree!
While describing the win as his biggest achievement so far, the newly crowned Soca King, JJ, is advocating for the highly attended, regional competition to be given greater prominence within the official festivities.
The event saw 15 competitors from Anguilla, Trinidad, Grenada, St Vincent, St Kitts, St Maarten, USVI, and the Virgin Islands (VI), and was held two days before the official opening of the 2016 festivities.
Moments after being named the 2016 Soca Monarch, ‘JJ’ said there is no reason that competitors should be competing in an event of such importance outside of the official schedule of activities for the festival.
"[The] Soca monarch competition should not be outside of the festival, we haven't had a grand opening yet on this stage, and there is no reason why we should be here. Next year, I don't want to be here on the Saturday outside of the festival,” he said.
‘JJ’ remarked that the powers that be should look into the matter as, in all other countries; the Soca Monarch is one of the biggest shows of the festival season. When asked if he feels that his advocacy will change anything, he said he is not sure if it will, but he is hoping something will be done eventually.
Major milestone for ‘JJ’
‘JJ’ has been a singer for the past 15 years and this is his third year taking part in the competition. He says it was a major milestone for him.
“For the last couple of days I was overwhelmed, today I prayed, and I prayed and I kept praying because I was coming here [and] a lot of things were not how I wanted it to be…this is my greatest achievement.”
In addition to taking the title by two points over B’More, Parsons got the winning trophy and $10,000. According to him, he aims to reinvest his prize into the art form and take his musical talent to the four corners of the earth.
Other competitors were from: Anguilla- Soca Monarch, Lioness, Trinidad- Sekon Sta, St Kitts and Nevis- Blade and Mr Mention, Grenada- Loose Cannon, St Vincent and the Grenadines-Mad Skull, USVI- Kelly Jr, from Antigua/VI Drastic and from the VI -Hashim, Teejay, Shiloh and Pascal.
The competition, FLOW Soca Monarch BVI, Caribbean edition, was held under the theme 'BVI Meets Insomnia.'
To top off the night, Mr Cyril Joseph Thomas had more reasons to dance as he won a brand new car with his purchase of a ticket to the event.
