MANUEL HILL, Tortola, VI– Attorney Jamal S. Smith may have been killed since Monday evening, March 11, 2024, as police had received a report of a shooting in Manuel Reef since then.

Mr Smith was found dead with gunshot wounds at his home in Manuel Hill yesterday afternoon, March 12, 2024.

According to the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) in a press release today, Police received a report via the 911 call center at approximately 7:30 PM of a shooting at Manuel Reef. It said officers of the RVIPF and ambulance immediately responded to the scene. “Upon arrival, thorough searches were conducted in the area, but nothing suspicious was initially found.”

‘Apparent gunshot wounds’

The RVIPF said further investigations by officers led them to a residence in the Manuel Hill area. “After a thorough search of the premises, officers discovered the lifeless body of Mr Jamal Smith, 46, of Manuel Hill, an Attorney at law, with apparent gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.”

The RVIPF said it is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident. “We wish to reassure the community that our dedicated officers are fully committed to conducting a comprehensive and timely investigation into this matter. The safety and security of our residents remain our utmost priority.”

Police are appealing to anyone who may have seen Mr Smith Monday evening or anyone who have any information related to this incident to confidentially call the Crime Stoppers line at 800-8477 (TIPS) or overseas call 1-284-800- 8477 with the relevant information; or contact the RVIPF Intelligence Unit at 368-9339.

“Every piece of information, no matter how seemingly insignificant, could prove crucial in advancing the ongoing investigation,” the RVIPF stated.

Mr Smith’s death to be discussed @ NSC meeting today

Meanwhile, Acting Governor David D. Archer Jr has expressed “sincerest condolences” to the family, friends and colleagues of Mr Jamal S. Smith.

Mr Archer Jr, in a statement this afternoon, said Mr Smith will be remembered for his altruism as a prominent member of the Virgin Islands legal community who gave many years of service to the Territory by serving on a number of Boards including the Labour Arbitration Tribunal.

“As Acting Governor, I have already spoken to the Commissioner of Police and will attend the National Security Council meeting this afternoon. I am appealing to anyone with relevant information to contact the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF).”

The death of Mr Smith is the first homicide in the territory for 2024.

Condolences to the family of the late Attorney Jamal Smith. What is our Nature's Little Secret coming too. Since the police in the country do not even know our country. They do not even know how to find persons home. Back in the days of our respectable police officers they knew every local persons and where they live. They took time to walk the streets of the Road Town and mingle with the locals and guests. These we have today cannot even respond to a murder and find the person until the next day. This is very shameful. I am sure they might not have even know who the Attorney is. I do not know who the Governor nor Chief of Police is but they have to step up to the plate and do a much better job of fighting the crime in this country. I suggest that since the law enforcement cannot do their job because all they do is drive around in a vehicle all day long we need the governor to request the Scotland Yard Law Enforcement return to the territory to solve these unsolved crimes. Our home was once a peaceful place to live and visit now you have people making us prisoners in our our home. Parent(s) we have to do a much better job in bringing up our children. Young people you have to select your friends wisely. You are know by the company you keep. Let's take back our Nature's Little Secret from the hands of the people who do not care about our country. RIEP my brother. Condolences to the family and the entire 3rd. District.

Before the police and ambulance called off the emergency response did they call back the number of the person who called to make the report? Did they trace or speak to that person to garner more information? The Premier needs to look into this 911/999 emergency response system.

Oona get a call Monday 7.30 pm and located the man just about same time next day? It took oona a whole clock day to seach and find the man? Guess a flag should have been on fi him house. Gotta be kidding me. What the national security council going do now buddy other and sit and send condolences to Mr. Roy. Hey, youall might not have been able to prevent him from passing but he would have gotten some level of help. The amount of dumb questions youall ask when a person make a emergency call, the guy probably collapsed while being asked some irrelevant question.

Now we know our emergency 911 or whatever number it is need to be uograded. It could have been a child in distress. Get a system where the physical site of the call can be located. Even of the call drops for whatever reason, you can still find the address. But this BVI, to do so might be too complicated

Now I’m not saying you’re wrong but I’m not saying you’re right either. If you lived in that area or were familiar with it to say the least you would understand why they wouldn’t have found him. If you were told something happened Manuel reef you would search the flat first if you cane up inconclusive you would launch a further investigation which is what happened. Should they have called back the caller yes but what if the caller was someone living on the flat as well who was unsure where they heard the gun shot .

Seems like someone he knows and let into his house.
Hope he had cameras around and inside his house..He should have...Cameras or so cheap now and very easy to install. Every House hold should be equipped with cameras..Give another trusted person access to your cameras.

The idea of giving a trust person access to your home cameras is great. A Robber or killer knowing you have cameras will do 3 things. 1/ disconnect them..2/ Ceased your phone and computer and/ well mask up in disguise...Having a trusted person access will keep at least the footage active and available. Still , who can you trust, it's a great idea but a tough one..

Pray for the Young Men in the BVI

All these young men dying just like that - some from accidents and incidents, some being gunned down, shot to death, killed on scooters etc.

Then we have an other set of young men sleeping on the street, begging for money and becoming mentally insane from drugs and whatever the cause.

Then we have the other set ending up in prison or involve in criminal activities, some do not want to work and is no benefit to their families, the church, their communities and society as well.

Soon it would not have any man for the young women to married to and young children will be growing up in a fatherless society.

There are more than one hundred plus (100 plus) Unsolved Murders in the British Virgin Islands. Are we waiting for more?

Anyone who would go into someone's home and shoot them to death had a personal vendetta imo. It would come as no surprise to me if the killer(s) was known to the victim. Strangers simply don't commit these kinds of acts unless they were involved in a burglary.

Based on what the police has put out there thus far, it does not appear to be a robbery gone bad.

Some lawyers are very distant with their employees. You will not know if they are coming into work or working from home or not working at all. And in some cases they might not say anything about not coming into work especially if they are on island. Also, some acts as though you are bothering them if you need to get something from them whether in office or on the phone so you let them bother you first. They could be dead in their office for a few hours and you may not know unless you are dropping a document in their office. So imagine if the lawyer did not come into work, you wont know anything or be suspicious because thats how some of them are on a daily basis. I’m not sure if he is one, but i know about this behavior because i worked for a lawyer like that. Its sad but its the truth

it is amazing the number of unsolved crimes in our little homeland

no updates from the united kingdom head of law enforcement yet the United Kingdom is trying to belittle our people

border security is lacking ample vigilance| BVI does not manufacture ammunition yet all manner of gun all over place

If a local was head of police with the level of criminal activity most folks would be asking for their heads

You can blame law enforcement all you want. What it comes down to is how these hooligans and thugs are running around the streets and the root of the cause is how these people were brought up and the '0' accountability for the parents who allowed it to happen. These are the same people sneaking ammunition and guns from neighboring islands. So go ahead and try to divert people's attention elsewhere because I'm not buying it!

Nobody is blaming law enforcement wholesale. It would be wrong to do so. However, it is law enforcement's job to solve crimes and to catch those persons out there who, according to you, were not brought up properly and with parents who allowed it to happen. I don't agree with that, by the way. The outside influences, thanks to social media, the music, everything encourages you to live your life however you think fit. Who among us are telling our friends and associates to do the right thing? Who are saying there is someone watching you from on high? He knows how many strands of hair you have on your head? You see, the Bible is being fulfilled. In these last days, evil is overpowering good, for it is always a fight between good and evil. It is either good or bad. You will suffer consequences for both. So let's stop the blame game and let us try to encourage each other to be kind, to love each other to be considerate, to be helpful.

And law enforcement, it doesn't matter whose fault it is. You took the job to solve crimes. Do it or get the hell out of the way and let somebody else try.

( YOU ALL ARE ALLOWING THESE KILLERS TO CONTINUE THEIR KILLING SPREE AND PLAYING HOLY AS IF IT NO BIG DEAL , AND STILL HAVE HEART TO POINT A FINGER AT THE LAW ( IT WOULD BE NICE IF THE KILLER FLEX OFF ON YOU OR ONE OF YOUR FAMILY MEMBER NEXT TIME ) PREFERABLY YOU
    • @@@2024 (14/03/2024, 20:30) Like (0) Dislike (0) Reply
Wow. I hope you are not a law enforcement official wishing that killers flex off on people's family members and innocent people in the street. What we all think we know is melee on the street and I damn sure won't be calling no hotline on hearsay when I have no idea if it is true or not. It is law enforcement's duty to INVESTIGATE crimes. We all sit in our homes and say what we hear or what we think, which is supersition, not proof. Should we call you and say that we believe this or that? You have to knock the bushes. In other words, get out of those damn vehicles that you drive around in and talk to the people. Somebody will quicker tell you what they heard from third, fourth or fifth parties face to face. The Commissioner loves to say that it makes no sense having persons sitting at a desk in a police station, but that must be what is happening for we do not see the police. This is a small country and I believe there are maybe 400 of you now.

So we point no fingers, we just say you've taken on a tough job. It is not easy and we know that, but you have to work as hard as you can to get at the truth. Some of you need to watch some of those crime solving shows on tv because sitting and waiting for people in a small community like this to call the Station makes no sense. Information has to be gathered from every possible source by you the investigator. That means coming out of your comfort zone and going to the bars in your street clothes and chatting with people. Drunken men will talk you to death. Most will be unhelpful, but you may get a nugget or two. So again, if you are not willing to do the work, get the hell out of the way and let others get an opportunity to try. BTW, the word on the street is you say anything and somehow word gets back to the street. Wonder how that happens. We all want to live another day.

Laundromats wash money and operate under the guise of legitimate business places. Ex police still have hands holding on to hands in the force. What kind of a future can our children have with the undercover actions of some of these so called teachers? I weep for the land of my birth!

What about the vacationing British couple found dead on the beach? One news organization did show a picture on
the internet and I recognize the neighborhood. Lived there myself while in the BVI. The article was censored
you couldn't read particulars. Didn't see it anywhere else. Well people drown over there if they are not careful.
But you folks are really racking it up. I can't even get a reply from the RVIPF about situations and cases that
came up in 2018, since then. Everyone shut it up. Witnesses in Carrot Bay were even afraid to come forward
because of repercussions. Including Belongers who are stable there a long time, and foreigners who are in the BVI on a work permit - afraid of losing it. lets just say the events were focused on a 'sappy' location.
UK is evil for sure, but they still should take over the BVI and stop all tourist trade. Protect others. cut off the
    BVI.
