KINGSTON, Tortola, VI- The Jaleel Cameron Foundation (JCF) is ramping up its fundraising drive to fulfil a promise to provide a scholarship for a local to be trained as an Electroencephalograph (EEG) Technician.

In 2015, the brainchild of the foundation Jaleel F. Cameron donated $20,000 for the purchase of the electroencephalogram to enable persons affected by epilepsy to have the brain scan done locally as opposed to travelling overseas.

BVISHA has EEG machine but no technician

After being furnished with the machine that year and no technician residing in the territory, the administration of the BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) had an arrangement that saw a technician journey to the territory to provide the service on a schedule.

Recently; however, the JCF has been made aware of a number of persons being referred to a local private hospital and some still travelling overseas to access the service while the machine donated by the JCF sits underutilised at the public hospital.

Cameron again to the rescue

Speaking on an update on JTV News, as the foundation continues its fundraising, the young philanthropist expressed regrets and pledged that his foundation will get at least one person to be trained.

Cameron, 16, said it is very unfortunate that children and adults are incurring expenses to get the test done.

"I am really sorry to hear of all the stories of adults and children that are suffering from seizures and still have to go away. My family and I dealt with that and it's not a great feeling and I don't want to hear of stories like that anymore."

'Let's all be a part of the solution'- Cameron

In a direct message to affected persons, Cameron said: " I am very sorry to hear about all the stories that your family members have to go through with still having to go away and to find the money for treatment. You have my word that my team and I will put in our best effort to try to make that never happen again."

He added, "Let's all be a part of the solution. Please donate to us and let's get someone to operate this machine full time."

The plea by Cameron was made at the JFC's first of its kind flea market held in the parking lot of Cedar International School in Kingston, Tortola on October 30, 2021.

In support of the fundraising flea market, a number of vendors purchased spots for the day.

The Jaleel F. Cameron Foundation also had three stalls.
