CANE GARDEN BAY, Tortola, VI- The Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports has delivered on a promise of a new playground to the Ivan Dawson Primary School in Cane Garden Bay.

During a short opening ceremony on Monday, April 20, 2026, Minister for Education, Youth Affairs and Sports, Hon Sharie B. de Castro (AL), said the road to getting the playground handed over began in late 2025.

“We lined out a number of things that you want to see done infrastructurally, as well as in terms of resources at the Ivan Dawson Primary School, and number one on the list was this amazing playground that you now see.”

The playground was procured over the Easter break, and Mr Stuart Donovan was the contractor on the playground project.

Hon de Castro expressed gratitude to Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) and her other government colleagues for providing the necessary funding to have the playground erected.

Hon Turnbull in attendance after playground issue

In January 2026, District Two Representative and Opposition Member Honourable Melvin M. Turnbull had playground equipment placed on the school’s premises; however, he was called out for not liaising with the Ministry of Education before and was ordered to have it removed.

However, Hon Turnbull was in attendance for the handing over ceremony. He said, “Today, I just want to say congratulations to the principal, to the staff, to the ministry team in education for providing you this playground. I know you're going to enjoy it. I know you're going to have an awesome time. And I want you to be safe. I want you to look out, especially for the younger children.”
