'It's time for VI to seek its freedom'- Julian Willock

- said average person in VI 'scared of prospect of self-determination'
Former Speaker of the Virgin Islands House of Assembly (HoA) Mr Julian Willock strongly believes it is time for the Virgin Islands (VI) to seek self-determination; however, it will be a hard task convincing the people due to the current narrative perpetuated by the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) and the Commissioner’s report. SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI- Former Speaker of the Virgin Islands House of Assembly (HoA) Mr Julian Willock believes it is time for the Virgin Islands (VI) to seek self-determination; however, it will be a hard task convincing the people due to the current narrative perpetuated by the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) and the Commissioner’s report.

During an interview with Tahira Burke of Caribupdate News Service on October 25, 2022, Mr Willock was asked whether he believes it is time for the VI to consider becoming an independent state?

“Yes, it is time for the BVI to seek its freedom. It is time for the BVI to seek its self-determination,” Mr Willock responded in the interview published on YouTube.

‘A real challenge’

According to the former Speaker; however, the push for self-determination “is a real challenge right now” because Britain, via its controversial CoI, has “brilliantly painted the local political class as corrupt” and not acting in the best interest of the people.

“It will be very hard now to raise those issues of freedom and self-determination,” Mr Willock opined.

He added that the average person in the Virgin Islands is scared of the prospect of self-determination.

“You know why? Because, in their mind, if we move to our freedom, if we move to self-determination, then those politicians that were named in the Commission of Inquiry will be more corrupt or more bad for us. And that is the narrative.”

Task not ‘insurmountable’

He said while not insurmountable, the advocates of self-determination and independence will have a hard time convincing the average person on the street that independence is the way to go.”

Asked what can be done to convince the people that self-determination is something that must be pursued, Mr Willock said five to eight months of sustained campaigning on educating the masses about independence could be effective.

“Because, you will have to convince the people of this country that we will be better off under independence.”

He asserted that education the people will bring a balance to the narrative since the public has only been fed with the scathing CoI Report that was done by a one-man Commissioner from the United Kingdom.

Boris Johnson CoI

CoI Commissioner Gary R. Hickinbottom was handpicked by former Governor and close ally of controversial former UK Prime Minister Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson, Mr Augustus J. U. Jaspert.

It was under the leadership of Boris Johnson, who is a known strong believer in colonialism, that the CoI was called.

Mr Johnson, who avoided a CoI into his then government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and funds, found it convenient to sponsor a CoI in the VI during the height of the pandemic.

It remains to be seen how the Rishi Sunak-led UK Government will respond to the current ‘Sword of Damocles’ Order in Council to suspend the Virgin Islands Constitution and impose direct rule on the VI.

Mr Willock is coming to the table late but better late than never. The brainwashing has resulted in a lack of confidence in local Virgin Island leader. A malaise of doubt in self - that some how white people can manage whereas black people can't. The same UK Minister that prescribed the Order in Council for the BVI made a complete mess of governing UK. BVI will remain a colony for the foreseeable future.

Sorry but no. The COI and arrest of our premier is what gave the populace lack of confidence in current leadership.
Arrogance is a poor tool for humble times.

I know lots of intelligent, ethical BVIslanders, but precious few of them are in politics.
Stop reducing it to a battle of skin color, make it a battle of right vs wrong.
That is where our collective energy should be focused, on betterment.
THEN the bvi will be ready to seek a more independent status, with pride rather than fear.
Fist step in healing is to recognize the ills.

I only partially in agreement with you Former Speaker or the House, Mr. Julian Willock. Truly it is time, but the true time is for us to take a closer examination of our behaviours towards each others, and accepted responsibilities for various political misconducts (mismanagement) of our finances) against our local employer, the people of the British Virgin Islands.
Because of this continuing accountability of our finances over many years, even though some of our finance as spent by mistakes made, the CoI probed was necessary. I do admited of this facts that the greater part of our finances was usefully spent by all previously administrations, in mine opinion.

Yes, it is time to seek our freedom from the UK, but first we need to get our house in order, only then will we be prepared to managed our own political affears properly without outside intervention, or being subjected to other countries political will in my clear, and honest opinion.
Thanks you very much for your courageous views on this critical issue of national self determination for the people of the British Virgin Islands. Much respect to you, Sir.

about 20% of the voting public, that is why they always rant about it but never put it to a referendum, now hopefully once the COI is finished and we are back on an even keel and have honest people in power then we can go to become the country we are, but thats about 5yrs away.

that is certainly not an issue: simply let the eligible voters to go to their various polling stations and vote yes or no for independence

Independence of this Lands can not be a political party thing. Independence must be the voice of the people

Whether you like or dislike Mr. Willock one would have to agree (I do ) that he has potential of successfully running for the Politucal office. I do believe that he has make some mistakes in the past which I will not mention. I think my first impressions came at the opening ceremony when he was sworn in as House Speaker when he delivered what I will call his acceptance speech. He was very professional and displayed a wide keen awareness and understanding of topics not only in the post he was about to enter but on Goverment issues locally within the region and around the world. I could go on but this blog would be too long. I believe that one does not have to befriend an enemy to sit and negotiate with him about a dispute between them if such negotiations would end or bring a meaningful resolution to a conflict. One should realized sometime there are things that one may loose to gain something of more importance. Mr Willock in my opinion has a keen sense of diplomacy to create a dialog with the UK and the BVI to bring about a meaningful solution to the current issues at hand. I would like to give him a chance to do so in the upcoming elections. He cannot be worst than some of our current Legislators or some of the names that are floating around. Remember you do not have to be a friend of the enemy to sit and have a dialog. As we all know "The pen could be mightier than the sword"

The problem that we are facing is the mismanagement of our finances by polititions over thirty years ago or ther a out, Mr. Julian Willock, not the CoI, 49 recommendations, not the UK'S Government, not the constitution. Stop trying to confuse Futher confused the mind of citizens of the BVI. First thing first must be dealt with in order of needs, not want.

How can you have confidence in a political class that repeated demonstrated that they are only interested in self, friends and families. Look at infrastructural development. For the past 10 years, despite a accumulated budget of over $3billion the only significant infrastructural development is the cruise ship dock, the hospital and the VG clinic. No sewage system, no proper water system, no proper Roads, same primary and secondary educational capacity since the 1990s, No solid waste system, No proper airport. No security, judicial infrastructure. Just look at the development of the other overseas territories with
