BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI – Businessman and former political candidate Troy E. Christopher has cautioned against countries taking sides in international conflicts.

He made these remarks in response to the January 3, 2026, attack by the United States on Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, on the UMOJA programme on January 7, 2026.

"It is not in our interest to get caught up in these types of hostile laws and disrespect of people and being in this type of behaviour. It is in our interest to maintain civility," he stated.

Do not believe the world is lawless

Christopher emphasised that it is crucial not to believe the world is lawless and that the United Nations does not exist.

He noted that there have been extensive discussions throughout the week, and many countries have come together to support the maintenance of international peace and security.

"Now, whether the United States continues to be lawless, is a different question, but if you fall under the narrative or the trickery of believing that we are already in a world where everybody is invading everybody, everybody ain’t invading everybody," he stated.

Maintain some type of level-headed, civilised behaviour

He pointed out that much of the unrest is originating from specific regions, stating, "It's important for us to be able to try to maintain some type of level-headed, civilised behaviour...we have to do what is necessary within our own borders and protect ourselves, but don't allow ourselves to say, 'We’re going all day, go help this man fight here and help this one fight there'.’’

Christopher warned that larger nations often place smaller countries in precarious positions, noting that when one nation is at war with another, these smaller countries have to be cautious about becoming entangled in their struggles.

He said mindfulness of how some countries manipulate conflicts to pit one nation against another, leading to further fighting, must be practised.

He concluded with a warning, "You have to be very careful with the divide and conquer mentality."

Mr. Christopher the UN is a joke. I am not a Trump fan because I do not disagree with many decisions he has made. In regards to the Maduro matter in 2020 Biden administration put 25 million bounty on the head of Maduro. Trump go into power an executed a warrant for Maduro arrest. The democrats began a campaign that Trump never followed international law all because it is Trump who freed the people of Venezuela the democrats are in happy. Maduro refused to step down from office in 2024 when he lost the election. Maduro was never the legitimate president of Venezuela. The Caribbean leaders associated themselves with Maduro because they were getting grants and cheap oil from Maduro. Now all the Caribbean leaders are backed into a corner by Trump by putting a $15.000 ban to obtain a visa. What will happen to us in the bvi if Trump refused the bvi visa and also to stop the tourist from coming to the bvi. Explain what will happen to the bvi economy. It is not wise to go independent. We should stay under the UK.
