ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Many turned up yesterday December 18, 2013 at the Adina Donovan Home for the Elderly to spend quality time with their loved ones. It was time for the annual Christmas celebrations but unique from years gone by was that the focus was mainly on having family members of residents join in the celebrations.

“This is really special to them,” said Ms Esme, as she chose to be called. “Even if they cannot respond in words or so you see they are shaking to the music so we know they are happy and appreciate us being here with them,” she added.

Seven years ago Ms Esme and her siblings made the conscious decision to have their mother Ms Mildred Donovan become a resident of the Adina Donovan Home for the elderly and they had every confidence that she was going to be in good care.

Manager (Ag.) of the Adina Donovan Home, Ms Jacqueline Donovan declared the annual Christmas party this year as "a family affair”. This theme was chosen in an effort to get families more involved in the care and support of their loved ones who are residents at the home. “… to support their loved ones once they are in here and to let them know that we care and we would like them also to be a part of their loved one’s life,” she told Virgin Islands News Online.

That mission was obviously accomplished as there was not room enough to contain family members and their loved ones at any one time. They, however, took turns in sharing the space to join in the singing and sharing of special moments. Mr Alred C. Frett and several of his colleagues took their God-given talent of musical entertainment to the home and made the day an even more accomplished one.

It was a touching sight seeing relatives holding the hands of their aged loved ones, singing with them for them. There were others who popped in at intervals before rushing off to their daily grind.

Some residents were evidently touched at the sight of their loved ones as there were tears trickling down their cheeks but which were lovingly dried by the gentle touch of their relatives.

More moving was the high turnout of male relatives. “I am really moved by the overwhelming response of relatives here today,” stated the Acting Manager of the Home. “We want this to continue because it is evident that it really meant a lot to our golden family here at the home.”

She was also in high praise for the government arms that have been ever supportive of the works and continued existence of the Home. The Ministry of Health was particularly singled out.

With the kind assistance of several corporate citizen and private individuals, management has successfully upgraded the living room area to make the environment more homely and friendly for the 24 resident seniors.

Many of these seniors helped to build this country and I wish them a wonderful and comfortable Christmas. I don't have any relatives at the home, but I am guilty of not visiting them from time to time. I got to fix that. Those of you who have relatives there, already prospering off of what they worked for, please don't turn your backs on them. Show them some love. Not only at Christmas but all year round.

Mrs. Donovan Great job. We visit on a regular basis and I am impressed with what you have done with the home. It looks and feel like a home. The staff also look prude of there surrounding. God bless you and your staff and the residents at the home. Season Greeting to you all.
