ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The latest round of matches in the BVIFA National League drew to a close on Sunday January 22 with the Islanders still unbeaten and the Wolues making it four wins in a row with an emphatic 4-1 victory over the Panthers.

Not even a power outage on Virgin Gorda which held up the top of the table clash between the Islanders and the Sugar Boys could stop the champions elect relentless march towards another League Championship as they ran out eventual 3-1 winners.

However, they will be looking curiously over their shoulders now as the “never say die” Wolues continued their impressive run of recent results with a defeat of the Panthers.

The Panthers had started 2012 with a new look line up and had thrashed the Haitians 11-1 in their previous game. This time though without Nigel Sanderson up front they were in for a tougher battle.

The first half was fairly even with Panthers opening the scoring through Omari Scott, before Will Pridgeon netted the equalizer with an unstoppable 30 yard drive into the top left corner. Then in the second half the Wolues took over.

Pridgeon scored his second, Matt Moss forced home another and James Shearman curled a free kick imperiously past Erron Ewers from 20 yards out.

For his first goal, Pridgeon admitted that he shot through a lack of fitness. “I have a bit of a groin strain and could feel the defender was about to catch me so I just swung my leg and in it went!”

Earlier in the day, the Ballstars got their season back on track following successive losses with a determined display and a 3-1 score line against the Haitian Stars, who remains winless and without a point.

Shamoy Thompson and Jamie Brown terrorized the Haitian defense for the entire first half, but it took a lucky break to open the scoring. Carlos Septus stepping up to fire home from the penalty spot after the Referee had adjudged what looked like a clean tackle as a foul.

The Ballstars though had earned their sliced of fortune and went on to boss the game with further goals coming from Brown and Fladimir Septus to round out the half.

The Haitian Stars pulled one back in the second half through Gregory Atime, but by then more of a worry to Coach “Nabo” was injuries sustained to both Thompson and Brown. Thompson was diagnosed with a mild concussion following a clash with the keeper and Brown will be recovering from a sore head, but is expected to play in the next game.

“We were a little sloppy and should have scored more goals against them, but I’m happy with the win,” commented “Nabo”.

On Saturday, One Love beat VG united 4-2 with Collin Green being the architect of the victory. He made the first goal with a delightful cross to the far post for Odaine Johnson to head home and then scored two himself in the second half have to secure all 3 points for his team.

Gavin Watson had doubled One Love’s lead before Leonardo Davis made it 2-1 at the break.

The first of Green’s two strikes came on 76 minutes and the second was an inch perfect side- footed free kick from 23 yards that was placed perfectly into the left hand corner.

“I had been watching soccer on TV before the game,” Green said. “I told the captain I wanted to try and just side footed the ball into the far corner.”

Mervin dainty scored with a ferocious free kick on 83 minutes pulled one back for VG, but One Love finished the stronger and were worthy winners.
