ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Valdo Andersen stole the show for the Islanders with a double strike to secure a 4-3 win in a friendly against the VI’s National Football Team on Saturday January 6, 2012, in a game that also was a send off for Joel Fahie, Trevor Peters and Christopher Telemaque as they depart for college in the States.

With the BVIFA league season resuming next weekend, the game was an ideal pointer as to the effects the Christmas break had had on the players, with some showing signs of enjoying a few dinners too many.

Both teams were less than full strength, but the game started at a good pace with end to end action reflecting the open nature of the match.

The Islanders handed a debut to Althea Scatliffe Primary School goalkeeper Phillip Jewels and he was far from over awed showing good handling skills and a command of his area.

Carlos Septus opened the scoring for the National Team from close range, giving Jewels no chance. Trevor Peters scored their second with a long range effort that took a wicked bounce just in front of the keeper before nestling into the right hand corner.

The Islanders though are nothing but relentless in their never say die attitude and following a corner from the right hand side, Noel Isaacs was quickest to react to a loose ball in the area.

Troy Cesar was unable to get his head to the ball under pressure and Isaacs recovered to swivel and fire the ball home from 12 yards to reduce the deficit to one.

After the half time break, the game continued to see-saw with the teams showing great attacking invention and some resolute defending. However, the introduction of the prolific Henroy Mitchell soon brought dividends for the Islanders.

His pace, power and proving too hot to handle, he powered home the Islanders' equalizer.

The best move of the match then saw the Islanders go ahead for the first time, with three players involved in a slick build up before Anderson scored his first and the Islanders third.

Isaacs won the ball on the half way line and laid a sublime pass into the path of Mitchell, who held off a challenge and then slipped the ball inside and across the penalty box. Andersen made no mistake with his first time volley.

The National Coach, Avondale Williams, has instilled new belief and resilience in the squad though and their heads never dropped. They came back at the Islanders hard with a wave of attacking moves down each flank, one of which resulted in the equalizer.

Septus on hand to fire home following a free kick on the edge of the box.

In other circumstances, the teams might have settled for a share of the points, but as the sun went down and the A.O. Shirley Ground became cast in the deepening dark of night, up popped Andersen to fire home the winner.

Even though the keeper was quick to blame bad light, he would be the first to admit that he could have and should have done better with the low shot that beat him.

It will be no consolation that the game finished moments later due to the darkness, but overall the teams had a good workout and the Islanders look more than ready to face One Love at 6 p.m. on Saturday January 14, on the A.O Shirley Grounds.

The first game will see the Panthers take on Haitian Stars at 4 p.m. while on Sunday January 15 over in Virgin Gorda, the Wolues will face VG United followed by the Lucien Stars playing Old Madrid.
