DUBAI, United Arab Emirates- Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who assembled theocratic power in Iran over the decades as its top leader and sought to turn it into a regional powerhouse, bringing it into confrontation with Israel and the United States over its nuclear programme while crushing democracy protests, has been killed in US and Israeli strikes. He was 86.

Iranian state media reported the death early Sunday, March 1, 2026, after a major attack launched by Israel and the United States. US President Donald J. Trump said hours earlier that Khamenei had been killed in the joint operation.

Iran has vowed revenge for the killing and launched missiles across the Middle East, including on US allies Bahrain, the UAE, and Qatar.

At least nine people have been killed and 27 injured in a missile strike on the Israeli city of Beit Shemesh, emergency services say.

One person has been killed in Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates, and and a death has also been reported in Kuwait. Dozens more people have been injured in strikes across the region.

Iranian state media reports that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) claims to have attacked the USS Lincoln aircraft carrier with four ballistic missiles, but Centcom says Tehran's missiles "did not even come close"

Thousands of flights have been grounded to and from the region, in one of the most serious disruptions to global travel since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, casualties are mounting as US and Israeli forces trade strikes with Iran for the second day.
