DUFFS BOTTOM, Tortola, VI- Deputy Premier and Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries and Agriculture Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has expressed concern with a recent call by a member of the public to have him lynched.

“Mr Speaker, one lady of European descent made a public post on Facebook and said I should be lynched, I am paraphrasing, at the Sunday Morning Well,” Dr Wheatley said during the 12th Sitting of the 3rd Session of the 4th House of Assembly on November 4, 2021.

Where is the outrage?

The post was reportedly made by an individual who has relentlessly trolled the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Government members, particularly Premier and Minister of Finance Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) and Dr Wheatley, on social media.

“I don’t see the outrage, because who am I? A little black boy from Fat Hogs Bay. Those things don’t outrage us,” said Dr Wheatley, who was debating a motion in the House of Assembly for the formation of a Special Committee to consider all the facts available and then consider three possible recommendations in relation to whether the House of Assembly should stand the legal cost incurred by the Speaker in a withdrawn case against three United Kingdom lawyers working for the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) while not being called to the Virgin Islands Bar.

Beware of the ‘divide & rule tactic’- Dr Wheatley

A handful of persons led by Rosemary Cindy Rosan-Jones have totally overlooked the fact that the lawyers may have violated the territory’s laws and have instead demanded via protests that the Speaker pay the fee out of his pocket.

According to Dr Wheatley, his spirit had sunk a bit over the last couple of days but he is finding the strength and courage to continue the fight for a better Virgin Islands.

And part of the fight for a better Virgin Islands, he said, has to do with enlightening the Virgin Islands people.

“Open our eyes and see clearly what is taking place here in the Virgin Islands.

Let us now allow the age-old tactic of divide and rule to destroy the Virgin Islands and allow them to take it from us yet again.”

Dr Wheatley called on the VI people to draw on the spirit of their ancestors, their example, their courage, and fight for a better Virgin Islands.

AND a whole lot of people would have overlooked the fact that many of our elected officials and the appointed Speaker had violated the territory's laws (that they themselves made), if it were not for the said lawyers bringing this to the people's attention. Now we know !!!!

Based on his language, he is uncertain regarding the COI lawyers breaking the law. For clarity however, they have not. An entire Commission was conducted without these lawyers been called before the bar...why then the speaker, ministers and other HOA member, and other public officials and citizens appeared if in fact, the law was broken? Think about it...knowing that they are breaking the law yet willingly participating makes you equally culpable and charged for aiding and abetting.

But of course, no one will be charged or prosecuted.

No one is calling for a lynching. Because the people is saying they are going to remove you from office next Election? Now you running scared and defensive because the people is speaking out which is their rights to do so. The people is gaining control which is a GOOD THING.IF THE PEOPLE DON’T SPEAK OUT FOR THEMSELVES, WHO WILL?

It is your democratic right to voice your concerns as a citizen and no one can stop that.

Wendy's statement went over and beyond that right in publically calling for the death of a government official. In what world is that acceptable?

And before you attempt to debate me on this subject and further and to the brewing pot of ignorance please go get a dictionary and find the deffinition of the word"lynch" & "strung up"and understand the end result of both of these words are death. And that is not ok.

Words matter. Lives master. Divide and rule matter. Lynching was a murderous tactic employed during slavery and during the Jim Crow era by vigilante groups and sanctioned by government to control Slaves/Blacks, particularly in the Southern US. Its intent was to intimidate and keep Blacks in their places, not getting too uppity. It was intending to keep blacks from interracial dating, voting, educational pursuits, economic empowerment, etc, aspiring for social, economical and judicial equity. Imagine a mother watching her son, brother, nephew, cousin, father, grandfather, husband swinging from the end of rope on tree. Political discourse should be civil and based on facts, truths, policies etc. At the end of the day, the strength of one’s ideas should carry the day. Divide and rule was another tactic used by slave holders, colonialists etc to control and exploit blacks. It took hold in the VI and among sister countries and it is a major factor in the lack of the region’s economic, social and political progress. Let’s shed that divisive conditioning millstone so that the region can move forward. The architects are reveling in the success of their design.

Pretty certain she doesn't come from any part of Europe and to be fair her words might be wrong but the sentiment that you have not done enough in the past two years to deal with the school's ESPECIALLY as there has been no kids in them for almost a year was completely on point. You need to pull up your big boy pants, get your boss to support the program because getting the school's up to speed in the next two years is going to be pretty much the only thing that will save you and the VIP from being dumped in 2023.

          String up
historical useage related to punishment for criminal activity by hanging by the neck, however current useage has evolved the term to indicate extreme anger or outrage.
Historical useage = Lets string (d)em up to the nearest tree.
Current useage = I'm so angry with those guys I'd like to string (d)em up (by their balls)!

Everything doesn't have to be about race. JS

Dear @@facebooker, what in my statement makes you feel that my focus was on race? The fact that you are trying to play the race card only cements the fact that you know the statement made was wrong, but i got time today so lets debate and actually shift the narative to a racial issue. Even if Sowande was a diffrent race Wendy's statenent is still unacceptable. But the fact that he is "a little black boy from Fat Hogs Bay" and she is a non melonated indivisual only makes it more of an insult and hatefull, slavery was and is not a joke, the lynching of our people was and is not a joke, the stringing up of our people was and is not a joke but yet you continue to make excuses for the outlandish statements this woman has made. Your ignorance is not an excuse.

Oh for heaven's sake. Personal attacks are a sure sign of an impotent argument.
              1. Racial references appeared in the article and throughout the thread.
              2. Hanging was widely practiced, and was not in the exclusive domain of slavery or racial oppression. Here's a newspaper excerpt from 1972: ROADTOWN, British Virgin Islands, June 28 (AP)—A 23‐ year‐old convicted murderer was hanged today.
              3. There was never any joking involved. My point was the phrase is an idiomatic expression and has taken on a different meaning over time. I guess melanin is the litmus test for intention.
              4. Nothing I said can be construed as condoning or excusing actual threats or acts of violence against persons of any persuasion. But for someone who has time on their hands and looking for something to be outraged about, I guess the linguistic examination of the 'outlandish statement' fits the bill.
              Over and out.

She is on Facebook cursing the government because she hasn't "eaten food in 6 months" cursing the government to build her a house. THE WOMAN IS MADD. I personally don't care much abouth or for Sowande he's just not my cup of tea, but what i do care abouth are my Virgin Islands people. It will be a cold day in hell before i side with a paper belonger who think they can come to our country and insight violence on any of our people and use her ignorance as an excuse. Wendy needs to make a public apology to Sowande her statement was rediculous then revoke her status send her back where she come from and she can go "string up" "lynch" her own people. Maybe you should go walk the plank : ). Do the schools need to be fixed yes, do public facilities need to be fixed yes. Does the aleged missuse of public funds need to be addressed yes. So now that we have covered what needs to be addressed by government lets talk about what we as a people need to take personal responsiblity for.

      1) We need to stop turning this territory into a garbage bin by dumping garbage illegally whenever we please and expecting government to fix the proble that we cotinuously create for ourselves.

2)We need to stop vandalising public facilities so that government will stop taking our tax money to keep fixing problems that we create

      3) Parents that know they have bad @#$ kids train your children so that when they go to school they arent ripping dispensers off walls, breaking sinks, doors, windows,punching/ripping holes through dry wall, sticking toilet paper on the celing, shitting on the floors ect.(all things that have happned in the public school system within this year alone you think its money alone teachers want yall bad @#$ kids driving them up the wall to)

Any how we need to work together for this place to turn around i grow tired of the one sided arguments.lets just make up our minds that we are going to fix the problems this territory has together and actually do it.
