TRELLIS BAY, Beef Island, VI- An Inter-Primary School Softball/Baseball League will be introduced next school year, Minister for Education, Youth Affairs and Sports Hon Sharie B. de Castro has revealed.

She was speaking at a welcome ceremony for Dariér Malone and Claury Scatliffe, who were part of the Great Britain Baseball National Women’s Team, which won the 2025 European Baseball Championships, which was held in Czechia from August 14 to 17, 2025.

Dariér was named Most Valuable Player while Claury was named Best Pitcher.

Government is investing heavily

De Castro said she grew up on the softball field, though she never played; the sport is personal to her.

“This sport means a lot to me, and I’m looking forward to the collaboration from VISBA and stakeholders for softball/baseball to see how we could ensure that, from the grassroots level to the adult level, that we are investing heavily.”

She said an investment has been made in acquiring softball/baseball gear.

“We are actually next school year hoping to start our Inter-Primary leagues among our schools…I got confirmation, the equipment is on its way, and we’re looking forward to starting that next school year.”

More interaction with VISBA

Hon de Castro also said more interaction with the Virgin Islands Softball Baseball Association (VISBA) is needed, where more individuals involved in softball and baseball can access grant funding from the government.

“We’ve given out significant funding to student athletes over the last two years, and that has been made possible through an additional grants program that is accessible, where they can get up to $9000 annually in funding in support of their academic pursuits.”

She added that the government and her ministry are serious about sports.

Hon de Castro revealed that funding was allocated in the budget for facilities upgrade.

“ So we are engaging with VISBA for before the end of the year to make sure that we expend some funding that we have allocated to be able to support the infrastructural development of sports in the Territory as well.”

I remembered when soft ball was big in high school in the 70's . Inter-house league, what fun. You could have felt the tension in the air. But then it died a natural death. Good initiative. Hope it is supported to the fullest and not be disregarded.

This minister is trying. She is one person, but she is showing attention to academics, sports, culture, arts - we voted for her because she was younger, educated, innovative and willing to work. We have a problem in the BVI where when we get what we ask for, we find reasons to not want it. Support and strengthen what we have instead of crucifying them.

We are in shambles from years of things being done incorrectly, yet expect everything to be corrected immediately without a national plan.

This is a return to past practice. As a student at Major Bay Primary( now Willard Wheatley), we competed against Road Town Primary. The competition was fierce, competitive, and friendly. Some of the members of Road Town Primary, eg. A. Todman, J. Eddy, etc., still have stories to tell. lol! More importantly , the primary schools were feeders for the premier
softball league, ie, Bert ‘Big Man’ Henley, Edward Francis aka Batman, among others. Currently, softball seems to be facing some challenges, so this program can assist in creating more interest in the game, the national sport.

This is good news. It is definitely time to bring back a Softball Program within the schools. Netball was also a part of the Schools' Sports Program and basketball should now be initiated. Our youths nowadays are addicted to social media and such programs will assist in alleviating the total focus on their phones which causes a reduction in grades and focus on their studies. Not to mention sitting and playing games and staring at a phone all day is not healthy and comes with other issues for our growing youths.

This will just be another initiative that looks good on paper but there will be no proper planning and funds to implement it. When its time for the kids to play coaches will be stuck trying to sources equipment and gear. Its this government m.o, dont be fooled.
