Independent Grenada MP moves to launch ‘first rate movement’
David made the announced in a live-streamed national address late Wednesday.
“We are careful not to say the people are launching a party – because this is too limiting. It’s a first-rate movement inspired by dreams and determination; by prayer and purpose,” he declared in his address.
The launch event will be held at the Grenada Trade Center at Grand Anse, on the southern ed of the capital.
David resigned from the New National Party in January following what has largely been seen as a rigged convention a month earlier.
He is highly regarded as Grenada’s most effective Foreign Minister – having served under both Prime Ministers Tillman J. Thomas and Keith C. Mitchell.
David had helped revive the Grenada foreign service, and promoted the expansion of relations with nations of the south and Africa.
While other leaders in Grenada have remained silent about the recent US demands to install military assets there, David has been the only parliamentarian to speak publicly on the issue, urging the island to protect its sovereignty.
He appeared to reference the issue in his address Wednesday.
“While navigating these hills and valleys, we have revived our acquaintance with a people who do not just say no – to anyone, even the powerful – in ensuring that their dignity remains intact and their national sovereignty protected. A people who consistently say yes to the pursuit of building a society on their own terms,” he said.
David declared: “My politics runs parallel to the very history of our people – many times knocked down, but never knocked out.
“Each time we fall down, we get back up; dust ourselves and then keep running,” he declared.
David who had sought to make a statement during Tuesday’s controversial aborted-session of the parliament, was barred from speaking, even if the parliamentary rules allowed for his “personal statement.”
The Independent MP was reportedly seeking to make what was described as “a bold statement” about the issue, even as a promised report by Prime Minister Dickon A.T. Mitchell was not forthcoming. The official opposition also continued to be mum on the issue.
“There is no adjournment on which we cannot speak; no statement we shall make that could be postponed,” he declared in clear reference to the parliamentary denial.
A recent published poll has showed that a party lead by David could immediately become a significant force.
A local newspaper aligned to the ruling New National Party last week warned the incumbent about David being able to hold the balance of power in a likely hung scenario – a situation that could give him a path to becoming the next prime minister.
“The polls are promising, but the future even more so,” a confident David declared.
