ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The Community Mental Health Services which is part of the British Virgin Islands Health Services Authority is hosting a Family Fun Day, including an Incredible Race, today, Saturday, May 17, 2014 at the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park as part of Mental Health Awareness Month.

The Community Mental Health Centre is committed to bringing awareness to the community of persons who are less fortunate, struggling to cope and function in their daily lives due to a mental illness.

As part of its annual campaign, the Community Mental Health Centre invites members of the public to participate in their reality competition, ‘The Incredible Race!’

“Join the competition and help us bring awareness to the challenges faced by persons with mental illness or problems in our community. Taking advantage of our lush tropical heritage in these Virgin Islands, the Community Mental Health Centre launches its own spin off of the reality series from CBS, the Amazing Race. In our competition there will be teams of four who will have to foster relationships that support each other during the competition’s physical and mental challenges,” said the centre.

It said that co-workers, family members, friends, club members, church members, etc. will engage in friendly and determined competition for fabulous prizes.

The Incredible Race is to begin at one of Tortola’s esteemed land marks, the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park where teams will get their direction and clues to their first exciting challenge.

“From there they will race around the island in an effort to conquer amazing feats of physical and mental contests. Failure to complete each leg of the race before your opponents will result in your elimination from the race!”

The Director of Community Mental Health Services, Dr. Virginia Rubaine stated, “Laughter and fun shared with family and friends are great ways to relieve stress and foster closer relationships with the people in our lives. The annual Family Fun Day and Incredible Race have been organised to facilitate greater awareness of good mental health and to give residents an avenue for strengthening their social supports.”

“This year's theme ‘Mind Your Health,’ highlights the absolute importance of combining activities that increase our mental and physical well-being,” she said.

She also added, "The Family Fun Day activities include a bouncy castle, face painting, glitter tattoos, music, food for sale and many prizes for the fun day participants.”

There will be a grand prize give away of a new Samsung Galaxy Tablet to a lucky participant attending the Family Fun Day.
