ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - A day after returning from an important regional meeting in Aruba of the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force (CFATF) where she defended the Territory’s interest on the Mutual Financial Action Report, effective today, December 2, 2023, until Wednesday, December 6, 2023, Deputy Premier Hon Lorna G. Smith OBE (AL) has been appointed to Act in the position of Premier and Minister of Finance.

Honourable Smith’s appointment is in accordance with Section 55 (1) of the Virgin Islands Constitution Order, 2007 which states, “If the Premier is expected to be absent from the Virgin Islands for more than forty-eight hours, the Governor shall authorise the Deputy Premier to perform the functions of the office of Premier; and the Governor shall revoke this authority on the return to the Virgin Islands of the Premier.”

Dubai meeting critical to VI- Dr Wheatley

The Premier Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) is currently in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) with a small delegation attending the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28).

Dr. Wheatley noted that the Virgin Islands’ presence at the 2023 COP 28 meeting of world leaders presents an excellent opportunity for him to advocate in an international forum, the needs of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) that are especially vulnerable to ill effects of climate change.

“We will advocate for climate justice, where major polluters recognise their responsibility to assist those disproportionately affected, in adaption and mitigation, by adopting metrics which properly assess eligibility for concessional finance,” Dr Wheatley stated in a Government Information Service (GIS) press release on November 29, 2023.

The Premier is expected to return to the VI around December 6, 2023.

It turned out more like a marathon in getting the bvi fixed and it is taking a longer road than we expected with a few twists and turns. But in the end this Government will prevail

Thank God for Lorna We need her leadership to keep the bvi first whereas the three party opposition havd their own interests first, with all having selfish motivations.

I guess the “Premier” needed an ego boost and rub shoulders with the big boys. I wonder how much this is costing us? Of course they’re no records kept.

Frankly, she could keep the seat. It couldn't be any worse than what we got except maybe the two greedy Anguillians will run amok. Even that may be an improvement over the slow one dey.

At this critical stage in Lorna's life, she was required to ask herself, "where am I needed most.” it was to join the vip and help rebuild the bvi and we thank you. Ignore the confusion and hunger for power of the opposition

I totally agree. Hon Mrs. Smith has always had and continues to have, our country’s best interest at heart. I am proud of her for standing tall despite all the ridicule. Proud of you Hon Mrs. Smith. You continue to stay in our corner. If you were to run again you would still have my vote. Country first!!
