ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- On Monday, February 15, 2021, customers who conducted business with the Department of Immigration had their first look at the officers wearing their newly designed uniform.

Chief Immigration Officer, Mr Ian B. Penn expressed his approval of the new uniform and believes that his officers share the same sentiment, a press release from Government Information Service on Thursday, February 18, 2021, stated.

Senior officers will continue to wear white

Mr Penn said Immigration Officers demonstrate a level of authority and respect in their daily duties as law enforcement officers. He further stated, “The change of uniform is just one part of the Department’s ongoing initiatives, and I am very happy and proud to see the new image being portrayed at our Ports of Entry. It is also important to note that Senior Officers will continue to wear a white shirt which serves to distinguish seniority from other officers at the Ports.”

Minister for Natural Resources, Labour and Immigration, Honourable Vincent Wheatley stated, “I am quite pleased to see another positive change within the Immigration Department as it continues to build upon its service to the public. The new uniform is one of many changes being made in the department with many more to come.”

According to the press release, the Department of Immigration continues to play a vital role in maintaining security and prosperity in building a stronger and better Virgin Islands.

It said the Department utilises fair but firm immigration control measures which serves to regulate and facilitate the movement of people throughout the Territory’s borders, while exercising sound judgment in a courteous manner in accordance with the territory's Immigration laws.

What is with all the badges and epaulets? Who cares, other than the immigration staff, about seniority. Why not put them all the same colour polo shirt and try and dispense with the ridiculous over formality and pseudo importance. What is it with them having to refer to each other as officer rather than by their names. Ridiculous self importance. They all look so uncomfortable in the uniforms!

Money would be better spent on improving customer service (again). Seems frivolous in light of all the pandemic related difficulties. Besides, it's not like people are pounding on the door to get in these days.

Money would be better spent training them to have a more welcoming demeanor. Very poor customer service skills. BVI will learn when its too late. Not good at all, its like putting on clean clothes on dutty skin.

It must be cause I have never been through immigration and had an unpleasant experience. Do they smile 24/7? No lol but neither do I expect them to. They’re officers, not receptionists. Now if they’re talking to people harshly, or being rough to the touch then I guess. But no where in the world I’ve been to have the immigration officers been smiling from ear to ear and excessively nice. They are stern and no-nonsense so it should be no different here.

Should have saved the money and invested in an upgraded computer system instead. Although maybe the problem with that is it would do a few civil servants out of a cushy job
