Iconic CGB businessman Stanley A. Hodge passes
Mr Hodge passed away at a villa in Cane Garden Bay, Tortola, on Sunday, April 5, 2020 after a period of illness.
He was 74 years of age, having been born on February 13, 1946.
Mr Hodge was known as one of the first persons to set up a beach bar at Cane Garden Bay and once operated a restaurant.
He also owned Carrie’s Island Comfort Inn and Stanley’s Welcome Villas in Cane Garden Bay up to the time of his passing.
‘Stanley was tourism’- Hon Melvin M. Turnbull
Second District Representative, Honourable Melvin M. Turnbull described the late Mr Hodge as an iconic figure in the Virgin Islands.
“He was tourism in Cane Garden Bay, he was a leader in tourism,” Hon Turnbull commented, recalling that Mr Hodge started with selling triggerfish.
“That was the only fish he used to sell at his restaurant and then he started doing the burgers and fries, which had become world renowned. And then everybody knew Stanley’s Welcome Bar.”
Hon Turnbull said Mr Hodge served the community well and became a personal friend of his.
A respectable man
“He is somebody I looked up to all my life, he has always been a respectable person and at the same time he was somebody you didn’t want to cross because he wasn’t afraid to say what he wanted to say,” Hon Turnbull told Virgin Islands News Online.
He shared that one of the fondest memories of the late Mr Hodge is of 2015 when he first ran for office in the Second District with the National Democratic Party (NDP).
“Mr Hodge said ‘Who you running with?’ and I told him, he said ‘don’t come a step further cause I am not supporting them at all.”
Hon Turnbull noted too that there were some rains and floods in 2016 and a portion of Mr Hodge’s hillside fell down but he assured Mr Hodge he would get the problem fixed, which he did.
He said Mr Hodge had personally met him to express his gratitude.
The Second District Representative, who is also related to Mr Hodge, said he met and prayed with Mr Hodge while he was in hospital prior to him being flown overseas for further treatment.
“I think he was satisfied in that he had done his work, where he has reached out and served and looked out for who he had looked out for.
“It is a tremendous loss to the village of Cane Garden Bay and to the Territory, Mr Turnbull said, while extending condolences to the family.
“We just want them to know that God is still in control.”

Virgin Islands News Online also spoke to one of Mr Hodge’s sons, Delvet Hodge aka ‘Del’, who confirmed that Mr Hodge passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2020.
