‘I will now be staying on into January’ 2021- Unpopular Gov Jaspert

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- After becoming highly controversial following insensitive statements regarding reparations for slavery and frequent antagonism against the elected Government of the Virgin Islands, the Virgin Islands would have been glad to see the back of Governor Augustus J. U. Jaspert this year end; however, it will have to bear up with his presence in the territory until January 2021.

“Finally, as you all know, as I previously stated, I was due to leave here at the end of this year. However, I will now be staying on into January until the new Governor, Mr John Rankin, is sworn in,” the unelected Governor and United Kingdom national stated during his ‘Catch up with the Media’ on Thursday, December 3, 2020.

The Governor claimed his delayed departure will allow him to continue to support the Public Service and the Deputy Governor “who are doing tremendous” work to support the Territory at this time.

“It will allow a smooth handover to my successor, in case of any disruptions caused by travel and quarantine. And it will allow me to consider the concerns put to me, in consultation with BVI institutions.”

‘Reckless’ Governor

The Governor shockingly brought a number of unsubstantiated allegations of irregularities in the public service, which he himself has admitted are “purely allegations”.

Why the Governor would bring unproven claims to the public, knowing the reputational damage possible to the Virgin Islands, including internationally, is bizarre.

His actions have drawn the ire of Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1), who labelled the Governor’s public utterances as “reckless”.

Speaking on his extra time in the VI, Governor Jaspert, said: “We hope that during this period, we can have open and honest conversations about what we need to do to build better governance in BVI. The vast, vast majority of people in BVI are honest and want the best for this Territory. I hope that all voices will be heard and respected.”

Unpopular Governor

Mr Jaspert, who has become unpopular for saying that the Virgin Islands should not expect any reparations for the evil acts of slavery and has defended the keep of names of landmarks named after perpetrators of slavery, torture, murder, rape, plunder and genocide, came to the Virgin Islands in 2017 and had requested an extension for an additional year.

The UK appointed Governor was also accused of interfering with the legislative branch earlier this year when he tried to dictate to the House of Assembly (HoA) to meet so he would not miss the deadline for the laying of the BVI Airways Report in the HoA.

Veteran legislator Honourable Julian Fraser RA (R3) subsequently brought a motion to the HoA seeking to have the Governor reprimanded for the delay of the report; however, the motion was defeated.

According to the United Kingdom Government, Mr John J. Rankin, CMG, who is currently serving as Governor of Bermuda, will replace Mr Jaspert, who exits the VI this year-end.

Jonah Jaspet was supposed to be here until August 2021 having asked for and secured a 12 month extension to his 3 year contract that commenced in August 2017 (just before the floods, and a month before the hurricanes). After complaints by the BVI Government, his term was shortened and he was told that his term would be recalled to London early. This is very very unusual. He is still being recalled in January, and the suggestion that his terms is being extended until January is not accurate - he has known about his recall to London for an long time. His time might have been extended for a day or two, but he will still be recalled in January - ie 9 months early. Hopefully he will take his Jonah touch with him, and the new Governor will not bring the same curse on the BVI. Jonah Jaspert continually tells us that he is doing good work - but he is the only one that seems to think so - even London have decided to get him out early.

i really don't understand the 'reparations money' argument. Why are entitled to any money, and who do you say is liable to pay it to you? Why is that person liable to pay it to you? If you can manage yourself, then please pay the money to yourself.

How typically BVI to say we want "our reparations money", closely followed by "we can manage our selves". All this on the heels of a huge drug bust. Most of us feel the Governor has done a good job in a very difficult situation.

Gov. Jaspert remains very popular. His efforts after IrmaMaria were amazing at helping the BVI and his desire to see good governance and corruption rooted out are appreciated by all who don't have their noses in the trough. Take a poll of all people in the BVI, Belongers and residents, and you'll see that the majority favor what he's done. He will be missed, but I have no doubt that the new Governor will continue the same work. Changing the man won't change the job that needs doing. Corruption and crime have stolen from the people of the Virgin Islands for years. It's pay-back time.

The comments in some of those blogs cannot be from Virginislanders. Where is the love and respect this country was built on from our fore parents? Have all our morals taught by them g one out the door? Do not let others lead you astray. When we answer to God money will not save us. What wil l matter is how we treat our fellowmen. That comes from scripture in many ways. All we have or do, without love we are nothing.

I donot have a fish to fry here. However, the street is asking why the Governor allowed the NDP Government to get away with the mismanagement of so much money but now making the VIP Government look bad for unsubstantiated claims. Governors should be neutral.
