ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Honourable Kye M. Rymer (R5), the Minister for Communications and Works, has stated: “I will not offer excuses. The state of some roads is unacceptable, and I apologise for the disruption this has caused residents and businesses.”

The Minister made this statement of accountability during a press conference on Friday, December 12, 2025, while addressing the poor condition of roads across the Virgin Islands (VI).

Several road projects underway

The government has initiated several major road infrastructure projects aimed at improving road conditions across the territory.

These projects focus on the rehabilitation and resiliency of the road network, including significant works in Sea Cows Bay, Greenland, Shepherd Hill, Fort Hill, Ridge Road, Virgin Gorda, Jost van Dyke, and Anegada.

Key projects on Upper Johnson Ghut/Long Trench, Fort Hill, and Windy Hill are currently in the design or development phase by the Virgin Islands Recovery and Development Agency (RDA).

Meanwhile, recent completions include the Paraquita Bay Road.

Delays

It was previously reported by Dean H. Greenaway, Communication Specialist in the Ministry of Communications and Works, that the delay in the overlay of several roads was due to technical issues.

The Minister acknowledged that this concern was valid, noting that some delays were caused by challenges at the asphalt plant.

“These issues were not the result of negligence or any desire to leave people uncomfortable,” he stated.

He further mentioned that targeted road patching projects would commence this weekend.

'Better is coming'

Hon Rymer also highlighted that the government has signed several major infrastructure contracts, including one for a road in Sabbath Hill, to address these issues.

“I assure you that better is coming,” he stated.

Additionally, the Minister for Communications and Works announced that the Cabinet approved the overlay of the road from the Western Ferry Terminal to the Road Town Ferry Terminal.

“We hope to start these works soon, which will include overlaying and adding road markings, as well as cat eyes and reflectors for the centerline,” Hon Rymer explained.

One of the worst roads is the one in his district going to the jehovah witness church, who had the bright idea to cut big squares out of it to fix pipes then don't pave it back, its been months now, its a disgrace, residents suffering an tourists have to see that when them taxi drivers take them up the hill, we can't even do simple jobs like that on time, we suck as a nation.

The article says road works in Sea Cows Bay, are they blind, they ripped up the roads months ago and left them ripped up. A 10 year could do a better job.

Can the Government/Public Works Department fix the wide crater located in the middle of the road at the Port Purcell roundabout? It is becoming a real challenge living in the BVI. EVERYTHING is an absolute mess. Where is the money we pay in taxes going? What is this Government REALLY doing? Jesus Christ!

Lets maintain the street lights too. These drivers are out of control with the high beams-- resulting in night accidents/near misses.

They dig up the road to fix a pipe fat hogs bay in front of Frozen Imports. Everytime it rains the hole gets bigger. You would of thought the area where the premier resides would get preferred treatment. Then I forgot he always flying someplace or at a party. The struggle is real.
