Hon Myron V. Walwyn also pointed out another significant issue regarding the maintenance of garbage bins.’’You see the bins overflowing, they come and they bring the boxes, they won't even say, let me break the boxes down so that when other people come to use their space in there, they throw the box in there just like that.’’ Photo:Facebook

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The Leader of the Opposition, Hon Myron V. Walwyn (R6), has stated that he has taken action due to growing concerns about the environment in various districts, particularly in his Sixth District.

During the First sitting of the Third Session of the Fifth House of Assembly of the Virgin Islands on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, he emphasised that more needs to be done to ensure residents keep their districts clean.

'I catch one'

One of the main issues he highlighted is how businesses dispose of their waste. "The businesses in the territory, Madam Speaker, not all of them, but some of them. Up to yesterday, I catch one."

Walwyn explained, "I turn police now, you know. I turn police in my district, because when I catch you doing something you’re not supposed to do, inside of that district, there I come out of my car, and I’m calling you up."

He expressed his desire for the Sixth District to be well-kept, stating, "I want the district to look proper"

He recounted an incident from the previous day: "I caught one yesterday. Some of them, they get a little job from somewhere, to carry the garbage, or the bulk waste, down to Pockwood Pond, and they find the nearest bin to deposit it in. I catch one, I catch it so good he was afraid to see me."

Hon Walwyn called for more stringent laws and for the introduction of litter wardens or law enforcement officers to address this issue. "We got to try to get the businesses find a way. We have to get inspectors. If we got to make law enforcement, also litter wardens or whatever it is we have to do, let us get it done because we got to keep the place clean."
