The Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Myron V. Walwyn (R6), has stated that he has taken action due to growing concerns about the environment in various districts, particularly in his District Six. Photo:Internet
Hon Myron V. Walwyn also pointed out another significant issue regarding the maintenance of garbage bins.’’You see the bins overflowing, they come and they bring the boxes, they won't even say, let me break the boxes down so that when other people come to use their space in there, they throw the box in there just like that.’’ Photo:Facebook

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The Leader of the Opposition, Hon Myron V. Walwyn (R6), has stated that he has taken action due to growing concerns about the environment in various districts, particularly in his Sixth District.

During the First sitting of the Third Session of the Fifth House of Assembly of the Virgin Islands on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, he emphasised that more needs to be done to ensure residents keep their districts clean.

'I catch one'

One of the main issues he highlighted is how businesses dispose of their waste. "The businesses in the territory, Madam Speaker, not all of them, but some of them. Up to yesterday, I catch one."

Walwyn explained, "I turn police now, you know. I turn police in my district, because when I catch you doing something you’re not supposed to do, inside of that district, there I come out of my car, and I’m calling you up."

He expressed his desire for the Sixth District to be well-kept, stating, "I want the district to look proper"

He recounted an incident from the previous day: "I caught one yesterday. Some of them, they get a little job from somewhere, to carry the garbage, or the bulk waste, down to Pockwood Pond, and they find the nearest bin to deposit it in. I catch one, I catch it so good he was afraid to see me."

Hon Walwyn called for more stringent laws and for the introduction of litter wardens or law enforcement officers to address this issue. "We got to try to get the businesses find a way. We have to get inspectors. If we got to make law enforcement, also litter wardens or whatever it is we have to do, let us get it done because we got to keep the place clean."

Litter Wardens. Ha ha. Think we been paying them for years but like the guy at Pockwood Pond they sat at home watching TV.

"Fifty six litter wardens are now fully equipped to carry out their duties and have been collecting their identification cards over the past week."

I agree with him to an extent. This is a two-way coin situation. As a minister for the district of course when you see wrong you should put a stop to it. We as a community need to do better. We want clean streets, not for tourist but for ourselves. Its such a shame when you see the dumpster piled up with all the waste that could only stem from businesses. Cutting cost? Its a drive down the road and back. Let's get it together, because we can do better. And to fellow regular people, we can do better than dumping big mattress, stove and fridge. Especially leaving them in the roads, which we barely have. Let's do what we can. Please.
  • It’s good to see Hon Myron V. Walwyn taking a stand on this issue! It’s frustrating when people aren’t doing their part to keep the environment clean, especially when businesses contribute to the problem. It’s great that he’s not afraid to take action himself, but hopefully, with stronger laws and more enforcement, this can be tackled in the long term. The Virgin Islands deserve to look as beautiful as possible!

This problem with the BULKY WASTE was magnified when ALL (13) gave the former WMD Director autonomy to do BS — ( DEPOSIT bulky next to the green bins ——instead of taking them to dumpsite —- then the removal of GREEN BINS !! We BVI have moved away from having OLD OIL DRUMS by our gates 25-30 years now —- YET he brought this back (about HOUSE /HOUSE ) collection ; There is space ( side walks / easements/ shoulders ) as EVERY property line AND building comes out to the motorable road . Where are the bins going to be placed ? Who will recover the empty drums when the truck empties them ?? WASTE. MANAGEMENT has gone 30 years backwards because WE ( BH. ) people have No respect for ourselves and many believe ;Once it’s IMPORTED it is BETTER than LOCAL — no vision. We all perish
