ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– Leader of the Government of National Unity, Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) says he hopes the coalition government lives beyond the next general elections constitutionally due by May 2023.

Dr Wheatley was at the time speaking on the July 13, 2022, episode of Territories Talk, a cross-border British Overseas Territories talk show hosted by Shaina M. Smith-Archer from the Virgin Islands and guest host Damian Wilson of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The Virgin Islands' Premier, while addressing questions regarding his government’s survival as a unit for the 2023 elections,  said: “I surely hope that the coalition lasts even beyond the next election, because of course sometimes when you [are] arguing and fighting, you really forget how like-minded you actually are.”

Dr Wheatley added: “The Members who came across from the different groups, we agree on a lot more than we disagree on, and I believe that it's in the best interest of the people of the Virgin Islands for us to continue working together.”

He also said the National Unity Government is the best way to implement reform in the territory.

'I like the idea of all hands on deck'- Premier

The Premier added that he needs everybody working and being on the same page; however, that is not to discount the role of the Opposition.

“The Opposition has a very important role in terms of holding the government's feet to the fire. You'll always need a position to be able to do that. But of course, I like the idea of all hands on deck and everybody working together."

Former Deputy Premier, Dr Kedrick D. Pickering; however, has taken a different approach regarding the role of the National Unity Government, which was formed to stave off UK direct rule as it relates to the Commission of Inquiry recommendations.

Dr Pickering said the citizen of this country should recognise that the Unity Government is just an interim government, as the country still needs a reset and that opportunity will be presented at the next general elections.

“The Unity Government has a responsibility to take us from where we are now to the election, then the people must be involved in the election process," he told talk show host, Claude O. Skelton-Cline during the July 5, 2022, edition of the Honestly Speaking radio show.

what you are saying is heard but something is still being missed no matter how much we come together and work if you are working for the wrong cause it is still all in vain and in government there is a reflection of a high level of ignorance and no presence of the desire to seek for wisdom the same old things are being said and done.it all boils down to one thing you all done know what is truely important and a high level of selfishness is being exercised God help us

The unity concept is working well. I like it. My one Issue is that Marlon should be Deputy. Don't like the Idea that VIP has the Premier and the Deputy Premier..Give NDP deputy Premier and that will be a true coalition..

Thank you, I am always saying that I can't support the jump up to form group. Where is this unity?
I might have been a little bit more understanding ,and more accepting if the old group had taken the top post (premier) and had passed on the deputy to the other side.(now I have nothing absolutely against Rhymer ,,as a matter of fact he is so understanding he should have been the leader)
I am still looking at the formation as it was too quick to decide upon. That's because of us are just as deceitful as Fahie, time will tell.its longer than twine..

Sloweveryday just wants to hold on to his title. He has nothing to show as education minister,District rep or premier. The others would be foolish to want to carry on under his leadership. His brother is his strength. His district needs a new leader. Thank God he's out of education. We don't know if it was a six and half a dozen in education though. However, elections need to happen and better persons need to be elected. That unity government opportunistic thing goes to go.

Let the citizens of the Virgin Islands exercise their right to elect Individuals NOT parties to represent and foster this Territory. The elected terms should also be no more than 2 such that other qualified individuals whom are given a fair chance to be called for the task. The same process to elect a Board Member, similarly should be for all intended persons who wish to seek an elected Seat. We must get away from the Party syndrome and elect individuals with the same vision to progression...even the positions of Premier must be appointed by ALL!

Party supporters don't want to get rid of the party system because that's the trough they drink from. The party system breeds corruption, division and slows progress, but many people don't seam to mind.
