ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Talk show host Edmund G. Maduro lashed out at his critics saying that if they themselves do not live to see his words come to past, then their children and grandchildren will.

He was speaking on his EGM Show aired last evening on ZROD 103.7 FM during which he addressed several topical issues.

However, Maduro was clearly peeved at the fact that nobody called in to the show to speak with him on any of the issues he mentioned, one of them being the issue of outsiders gaining more and more control over the lands in the territory.

“See? Not a call from you. Not one of you supported me. But I believe I’ll see on the blogs tomorrow [with] your ignorance and I am not afraid to say that,” he said.

He compared the situation to early South Africa, where white settlers raided lands of the blacks in the name of greed. He is of the view that the same thing is gradually happening here in the Virgin Islands and that people need to wake up to this new reality before it is too late.

“I want to refer you to South Africa. Nelson Mandela spent 27 years of his life in jail because he was fighting against racial discrimination in South Africa,” he said.

Maduro also said that the takeover is apparent in the yachting industry, where there are hardly any local yacht captains left in the territory.

“I am saying this to you because it is a reality. And you’re being dumb. We are being ignorant and complacent. If we are not careful these islands will be completely taken away from us. We will come right down to a South Africa,” he stated.

Maduro compared the territory’s elected representatives to the infamous Arthur Hodge for failing to look out for the interest of the common people. “Our own Arthur Hodge will turn us into a South Africa and if you don’t believe me your children down the road will see it. I am not stirring up confusion. I am not creating mischief,” he said.

“That is why they could say to you and me that they have rich white friends and that they and their families will be millionaires. Put what you want on the blog. I don’t care. I am seeing dangerous days ahead. The handwriting is on the wall but some of us can easily be fooled by an envelope of $2,000 every election season. Edmund G. Maduro never got one and will never want one,” he declared.

Maduro said that if persons in the territory continue to keep silent on these issues and ridicule him for speaking up on them then they will only be passing on the suffering to their children and their generations down the line.

Mr. Maduro's topics sometimes are viewed as folly, but today it is not. There are dark days ahead, of course. We have squandered our income, we have given away some of our prime resources, we are surrounded by the billionairs who found haven in these islands; some Ministers of Government favour outsiders than their locals. This is our home. All of a sudden when we learnt how to be sufficient, there is great interest about us. The leaders in UK cannot see a black nation flourish. It is in them to dominate. They been doing this from the days of Colonialism. We should have never been in the position we are in now. When are these young tings going to be able to leave their mother, a mother who cares nothing about the people. We must have a Central Registry in UK? What will that do to our economy? Can anyone think about the ripping effects?
Dear, Virgin Islander, it is time to speak up. It is time to speak out; it is time to say to David Cameron, you will not bring us to our knees again begging you for Granting Aid. Wake up, My People!

What Mr. Maduro is saying about the yacht charter industry is not only untrue, it is ridiculous. My son has been given every possible opportunity from several (white owned) charter companies. He joined the KATS programme when he was just three years old and learned to swim. Next he learned to row a boat, tie knots and learned basic sea skills. Then he learned how to sail and the lady who ran the programme got him a job at a charter company (as a captain) as soon as he asked her for help. She is white.

He was one of very few of the children involved in his group of friends (involved in the KATS programme over a period of 12 years) that was even remotely interested in pursuing a career in the industry. He is now in Canada finishing his last year of university and when he comes back, he already has a job waiting for him at a charter company located at Nanny Cay. Once he puts in about 5 more years learning the industry from the bottom up, and saves some money, he wants to start his own charter company. My husband and I fully support his ambitions. One of his friends from KATS is already in a related field, but not in chartering. Another of his friends is already working for a charter company as a captain.

So Mr. Maduro, why don't you get your facts straight rather than making erroneous claims. Ask the majority of young people who have had all the training, why they aren't interested in careers in the yacht charter industry.

Are you TRYING to promote racism within our community? Outsiders can only do as much as we let them. If our people aren't interested, how are "they" supposed to help our young people get involved in an industry in which they seem disinterested?

Perhaps people didn't call in because they see you for what you are. Step back Mr. Maduro, at take a REAL look at things. Put your obvious racial hatred aside and seek out the truth for a change.

I agree with you. Mr. Maduro has no idea what he is talking about when it comes to the charter industry. My father and Uncles are captains and work in the charter industry. Many of my friends and myself are in the charter industry. The biggest difference between back then and now is we see the benefits of working for ourselves rather than making a rich white man who owns the charter company rich. We all bought our own boats and started businesses of our own. So he is dead wrong on this topic

Let's not ignore the message because we may despise the messenger. Edmund is offering sage wisdom and advice. As he noted the full effect of our myopia may not come to fruition tommorow but it is coming. It is real and grand children will experience and live the effects.

Land is a scarce and non-renewable resource that we should protect and preserve. But if we do not and at the current lost rate, in the future, our grand children will only be able to lament as another blogger ( ReaLPol) like to say: "we may only be able to walk by, drive by, sail by or fly over and lament that our grand parents use to own this piece of prime real estate." Our grand parents disposed of it for peanuts but it is now selling for 7 figures for a fraction of an acre. Further, the "No Tresspasing" signs are emerging. We cannot blame the opportunistic expats, for we sold them the land. We failed to see the value of our land. Thus, we dispose of it to build a house, buy a boat, buy a car, buy some bling.......etc. Most of which depreciate in value.

Our foreparents (slaves) suffered through crimes against humanity with blood, sweat and tears so that we could have a piece of the rock. But we are selling it faster than butter melts in the sun. Let's not make our foreparents sacrifices be for nought. This is not a theoretical assumption for me, for I see my grandparents disposed of prime land for little or nothing.

BV islanders have known about this problem for years- but when election comes - they are blinded by the white envelope- now they have sold their heritage to outsiders- they made their beds- now they have to lie on it - that is why they all voted NDP in droves last election- they hate Fraser- but love outsiders

@ hating Fraser: the same party that fraser is a part of ruled this territory for over forty years (40 years) now NDP getting the blame for all that went wrong: most of this territory that is called private Islands were sold under the Virgin Islands Party: a person is called an outsider once them from the Caribbean the other group is called an investor: the NDP ruled our territory for just over 8 year , 3 terms in office whereas the VIP run things for 45 years: places like oil nut bay began under VIP; its is VIP that placed the water plant on prime agriculture land: you should be ashamed to be here chatting @$$ about hating Fraser, you hate him by chatting such foolishnesses: as I said once persons from the Caribbean they are outsiders the other settlers come up in here, owns all the offshore companies, have them own restaurants, buy out the hill sides, buy out the beach fronts, have them own social club , owns most of the charter companies and are seen as investors (its them that gone with your heritage)..... talk that!!!!

It is a hard choice but which is preferable?

Living with and dominated by wealthy caucasians or with the poor and the all criminally pervasive Jamaicans, Dominican Republicans,Vincentians,Guianese, Trinidadians .

With Immigration laws stacked against the bvislander and the resulting culture loss, either way ting done.

@ decision: straight talk and very true: but you can't throw your hands in air give up remember your grandchildren and keep the fight. Both the Caucasian and the other settlers should be regulated: not all Caucasians here are wealthy and NOT Caribbean nationals are crooks.....

White expats buying or offering to buy the land to build and improve value and economy for an upscale BVI.

Black expats demanding we give it to them for free along with container homes for creation of ghettos and subsequently a devalued BVI.
