DUFF’S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI– Virgin Islands Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has been saluted by Minister for Natural Resources and Labour and Second District Representative, Hon Melvin M. Turnbull for his leadership of the Virgin Islands over the last several months.

Hon Turnbull was at the time speaking during the Continuation of the Ninth Sitting of the Fourth Session of the Fourth House of Assembly, on December 21, 2022.

“It has been a tremendous honour to fight the fight that we've been fighting for this Virgin Islands over the last seven months with each and every member, and I know there's a lot of work yet to do, but I believe we have been able to make an imprint and an impact to represent the continued democracy of these Virgin Islands,” he added.

Formation of Unity Government 

Earlier in 2022, with the Government of the Virgin Islands and the Opposition, along with the people, against direct rule by the United Kingdom (UK), the Government and Opposition announced a coalition government on May 4, 2022, with the hope of staving off UK direct rule over the findings of a biased Commission of Inquiry (CoI), sponsored by the UK during the height of the global coronavirus pandemic.

The National Unity Government included Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7); Junior Minister for Tourism, Hon Alvera Maduro-Caines (R6); Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs and Sports, Hon Sharie B. de Castro (AL); and Minister for Communications and Works, Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5).

Hon Turnbull in his presentation at the sitting also expressed gratitude and appreciation to Dr Wheatley and reminded that while they fought when he was in the opposition, he was grateful for his leadership and for presenting the 2023 budget.

“I salute you, sir, for your first budget and I want to say I appreciate your willingness to take the lead in a very uncertain time, but knowing that you had the support of everyone in these Virgin Islands and in this front bench, to lead us this far,” he added.

    I concur. Smart move mitch...The Governor and the Premier will select the 7 administrators to run the Country when the constitution get suspended...

    Plain and simple, Mitch is a deceiver. He really saying that once he is in the government then the country was saved when in fact he helped planned the plot. SMDH. I will never vote for him again.

      Can you imagine he treats a local like this . How can you take bread out of your own people mounh ,and you pretent to know God. He better put his pride aside and do the right thing where this woman is concerned cause if he don't when God done with him he will wish he never attack a child of God. How a person grow up with a pastor as a father turns out to be such a SOB.. he is like the devil if he is not the HNC he is not happy. Hope he knows God is always above the devil. Keep treating people like your foot stool while you in power just remember on you way down from being high and mighty Mr. Puff up you will pass the same people you made your foot stool there. Don't forget Evey high thing must come down.

    I don’t trust ANYONE who jump ship. Mitch is looking for POWER, REMEMBER THE HISSY FIT HE THREW AT THE AIRPORT BECAUSE HE HAD TO GO THROUGH SECURITY KNOWING ONLY THE PREMIER AND THE POLICE COMMISSIONER IS EXEMPTED FROM GOING THROUGH SECURITY. WHEATLEY, THE SNAKES COME IN ALL SHAPES AND SIZES.

    I would agree, you cannot trust a ship jumper in the political arena. Perhaps that is the reason why that Smith lady is not getting anywhere in her political career. Mitch is looking for premier ship. How come the other members of the Unity Government is not saying anything. Acting like only his input counts.
