ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Social Commentator Julio S. Henry aka ‘Sam’ has moved to clarify and bring context to recent comments he made on the reduction of the COVID-19 accessory cost for tourists visiting the Virgin Islands.

Speaking on the November 17, 2020, edition of JTV's The Big Story with Cathy O. Richards, Henry said the comments made on the Umoja show calling Premier and Minister of Finance, Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) ‘crazy’ was not in bad taste, rather, to express surprise on the Government's bending to the cries to the people.

No bad intentions

“I said on another talk show… the Premier is crazy, not in a bad way, crazy in the sense that you know, he really responded to the cries of the people.

Henry continued, “but you know there's still people crying, there's still people saying that $175 for the amount of service you gonna get… testing, contact tracing app, wristband, so they can follow you, you know people are still saying that's a lot of money,” he said.

Mr Henry initially made the comments during the Monday, November 16, 2020, edition of the Umoja show, alongside host Cromwell Smith aka 'Edju En Ka'.

“I still think the Premier is a little crazy for even going so low,’ he told host Ms Richards on the Big Story, revealing that many persons including boat captains still think the $175 cost is too high.

COVID-19 era & special requirements

He underscored that tourists travelling to other destinations in the era of the COVID-19 pandemic should be prepared and know that part of the travelling requirements is to have funds.

“Now is a special time, this is a different time. This ain't where normally we could just jump on a plane, take your chance with just enough money for your hotel, your food, a little lounging and then you come back.”

“No!, you have to plan ahead of time for all these unexpected situations and the $175 is just part of that,” Mr Henry said.

Mr Henry PLEASE!! You’re only back-stepping because persons reacted harshly to your original comment.. “out of the heart speaketh truth”- you may not have called the Premier “crazy” in the sense that he may be mentally ill from a health prospective rather “you” meant he was crazy to lower the cost for the tests etc.. so guess what you were still wrong to say what you said so I stand on my original comment.. what “you” need to do is to apologize for you’re insensitive comment when it’s not you shelling out monies.. An apology would be more tasteful instead of coming on here trying to back-step..

You should have thought about that before you opened your mouth. But yes, you disrespected the leader of the Country when you Said that he was crazy to reduce the fees. In certain parts of the World you would have been hanged or put in jail for saying something like that. Next time, think before you open your mouth.

Our Government know what is the right thing to do but as soon as they get a little heat from residents they change their decisions. These people is only thinking about themselves and what they think is good for them is not necessarily what is best for the country. The Government have to think of the country. I will like to remind all of you who think this Virus is joke that the incubation period is fourteen days not two and four. If people are coming and they do not have enough days to quaranteen then let them stay home and come another time. It does not mean we are not welcoming, these are difficult times and I am sure most of the tourist realize that. There is no place in the world wjere they can go without abiding by the protocols. Guess what when we let our guards down and we have a serious out break no one will want to come and it will take years to build back the tourist industry. So all you bullies who like to have things your way keep it up time will tell.

Next time, think before you open your big mouth. You ran away potential visitors that was willing to still take a chance and come to the BVI. You need to issue a public apology to the Premier. Like I said, next time think before you open your mouth and stay out of things that don’t concern you. Your CONCERN SHOULD BE TEACHING YOUR TAXI DRIVERS ABOUT MANNERS AND PERSONAL HYGIENE.

Wow! New meaning to the expression "crazy"? So this means that we may have totally misunderstood a lot of what this social commentator had said in the past as what was said may differ significantly from what was meant. If one aspires to be a social commentator or talk show host he/she should at least have an above-average command of the language. Maybe they need to pass some form of language test before allowed to go on air alarming the country with poor word choice. Maybe I a little crazy ( in a good way).

Now he is trying to do damage control after his insensitive remarks towards the Tourist and the Premier. The tongue is small but it can do some serious and hurtful damage.

@hmmm. I hear what you’re saying and I concur in this sense; I don’t believe that Henry was implying that the Premier was crazy in the sense of being “mentally ill” Health-wise; he was in essence saying that the Premier lowering the cost of the tests etc was ludicrous (absurd, ridiculous). This I want to believe is why persons like myself find him to be hypocritical because like I said he was one of the screamers criticizing the Gov’t for not opening the borders sooner so he can get monies in his pocket when this high cost will deter tourists..He’s Also being hypocritical for he is not the one paying these fees to enter the BVI be it tourist or locals-all have to pay.. He just need to apologize - simple and think twice before opening his mouth. All what he is doing now is damage control, but like someone said you can’t unring the bell..

Ah set of bias people! Only because it’s SAM. Ain’t what was said or how it was said but it’s about who said it. Week after Week after Week you’ll sit back and watch Government employees of the British Virgin Islands Tourist Board disrespect our Premier, Deputy Premier and the rest of the Government but you’ll want to cut Sam neck for saying “1” thing. SMH you’ll people to one sided.

Sam should have stayed in his lane. The problem is everyone want to step into things and have input in things that is none of their concern. To many cooks dipping their hands in the pot will mess up the recipe.

Sam, though your words may have been well intentioned, words have consequences. They are like a rung bell; once a bell is ring , it cannot be unring. Suggest you apply the carpenters’ rule, ie, measure twice and cut once. Be careful about the sweet sound of your own voice. Take a pause for the cause.
