TRELLIS BAY, Beef Island, VI- The former Managing Director of the BVI Airports Authority (BVIAA), Mr Kurt A. G. Menal, has said his decision to tender his resignation was in the best interest of his personal and professional well-being.

Menal’s sudden resignation came on Thursday, May 7, 2026, and there was mixed information as to what led to his resignation, as some Board Members claimed that he wanted to give a three-month notice, but was told, as is the practice, he needed to go effective immediately.

"I made a decision for my personal and professional well-being," the St Lucian told JTV News on May 27, 2026.

He also rejected suggestions that he had been forced out or instructed to resign.

"No, I resigned and gave three months’ notice, but the Board exercised its option to pay in lieu of notice," JTV reported Menal as saying.

‘The time had come’

Meanwhile, Menal published on LinkedIn on May 27, 2026, that “after just over four remarkable years” serving as Managing Director of the British Virgin Islands Airports Authority, the time had come for him to close “this meaningful chapter” of his professional journey.

“It has been an incredible privilege to serve the people of the Virgin Islands and contribute to the advancement of the aviation sector, tourism industry, and broader economy.”

Successful tenure

The tenure of Mr Menal at the BVIAA has been regarded by many as a success story, and many expressed those sentiments in response to his LinkedIn post captioned 'Farewell BVIAA'.

Menal said that when he assumed his role at the BVIAA, one of the key priorities was strengthening air connectivity and positioning the VI for sustainable growth. “Through strategic air service development initiatives and targeted airline engagement, we successfully increased passenger traffic from 176,000 passengers in 2022 to 317,676 passengers in 2025 (an 80% increase), a significant milestone that reflects the growing confidence in the destination and the collective efforts of many committed stakeholders.

He also said he was especially proud to have played a key role in the meaningful engagement with American Eagle/Envoy that resulted in the establishment of non-stop service between Miami International Airport (MIA) and Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport (EIS).

During Mena’s tenure, several important capital projects aimed at improving operational efficiency, strengthening airport systems, and enhancing the overall passenger experience were undertaken.

Elevating the profile & influence of BVIAA

Beyond infrastructure and connectivity, Mr Menal said he was particularly proud of the progress made in elevating the profile and influence of the BVI Airports Authority within the regional and international aviation community.

“I proudly represented the BVI on the Airlift Committee of the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO) as both a member and Deputy Chair, advocating on behalf of the British Virgin Islands and the wider Caribbean region. We worked collaboratively as regional stakeholders to advance the mandate established by the Council of Ministers, emphasising the critical and inextricable relationship between airlift connectivity and tourism development.”

One of the areas Mr Menal said gave him immense pride was the commitment to people development. He said training and professional advancement were central pillars of the BVIAA’s strategy, and staff at all levels were provided with opportunities for training and exposure aimed at enhancing their expertise, strengthening operational competencies, and ultimately benefiting the organisation as a whole.

“Most importantly, I had the pleasure of working alongside an exceptional team at the BVI Airports Authority. Their dedication, professionalism, resilience, and commitment to excellence made every achievement possible. I will always hold many fond memories of our time working together.”

Mr Menal extended “sincere thanks” to the Government of the Virgin Islands for entrusting him with the opportunity to serve over the past four years.

“The British Virgin Islands will always hold a special place in my heart, and I look forward to seeing the Territory continue to soar to even greater heights.”

All these statutory boards are heavy handedly micro-managed by the government and to a lesser extent, an inept board of puppets.

You don’t have to explain anything to anyone. Sometimes we have to make decisions to protect our peace. You are a decent honest man and wherever your path takes you, you will do well.

Who benefited from this training? Ask the employees at the Airport

The training was intended to benefit Airport employees with potential for development and advancement. A number of staff members benefited from the opportunity, particularly those who expressed interest and participated in the process.

I understand how you are feeling, but are the natives qualified? And if they are, why didn’t they apply when the ads were posted?

Yes because the native Virgin Islanders do so well in other high ranking positions don’t they? They are upstanding citizens in the governmental positions aren’t they? They don’t waste your money or siphon off millions of dollars to benefit their friends.

It is very sad. He just signed a contract for four years didn’t know there was not supposed to sign his contract. It was not good many things he trying to clean. We had the hurricane in 2017. We had to pandemic in 2019 2020 the numbers went down but they were gonna come right back up. He’s sticking credit. He was not good for the BVI check him out. Do a report do a background check on him from where he came from and listen to people talk about him. I don’t want to sit too much bad things, but he was not good for to be. We divided people within the airport and he was dangerous for this airport. ????????

Only a guilty gossip, just like its root, is with the guide in its hands. You don't go any further than that, and everything will return to where it was, or worse. Why not give Mrs. Rubén a chance?

Imagine I have to park far from the Airport and haul my bags across the streets into the terminal. Who made that dumb asxxs decision. Every where in the Caribbean we park next to the terminal. In Tortola we have to drag our bags across the road. Nonsense. You need to be fired...

You can unload your bags at the airport f/o the doors if you have someone with you to watch them until you park your car. There is no need to drag them across from the parking lot. I've done it a few times.

Godspeed Mr Menal. All the best wherever next God takes you and please don't look back because its behind you for a reason. Thank you for your service over the past few years. There was no need for any explanation. I'm a Tolian and its no better for me neither. I have to be 4 generations deep on both sides to be considered indigenous, but them again none of my peoples were amongst the Ameridians. You get the gist. I hope you know and believe that your best is yet to come. I don't know you but even I can see how hard you tried. May God continue to bless you, Sir.
One of these days, this place is gonna get a big wake up call. Its as if we didn't learn any lessons from H. Irma or Maria. Y'all need to read Exodus 22:21, Leviticus 19:33-34 and Deuteronomy 10:19.

Sounds like he was caught up in a toxic work environment. Sadly, that’s all too common in government.

Some the numbers increased 80% when we got AA to Miami?
Imagine the crazies get their dream and we have flights from here to NY, London, Taipei and Timbuktu. Much bigger planes and more of them.
Imagine the increase in arrival numbers then.
And look outside to see the state of our roads, sewage, electric, water and other infrastructure.
Look at the damage we have already done to our nature.
And contemplate how much worse all the above will become when those numbers go sky high.
    More is not always better.
    Better is better.

This place is not a real place. It extends no courtesy to no expat or human not deemed to be from here. The sooner visitors and Down Islanders realise this fact, the better off they will be. Hospitality in the BVI extends to only the tourists, anyone else is not welocomed. Expats who get status through the legal process are always fought against because it should never take place. Mr. Menal is a profesional executive. Best believe he will not die of hunger.
