ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Speaker of the House of Assembly (HoA) Hon Corine N. George-Massicote has pledged to work towards addressing violence against women in the Virgin Islands (VI).

Hon George-Massicote made this commitment while speaking during the continuation of the Tenth Sitting of the Second Session of the Fifth House of Assembly on Thursday, October 30, 2025.

She attended the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Conference in Bridgetown, Barbados, from October 5 to 12, 2025.

The CPA is an international community of Commonwealth Parliaments and Legislatures working together to deepen the Commonwealth's commitment to the highest standards of democratic governance. It is made up of 180 Parliaments and Legislatures across the Commonwealth

Growing threat of violence against women examined

The conference brought together Speakers, Parliamentarians and experts from a wide range of jurisdictions to examine the growing threat of violence against women, particularly that which is facilitated or amplified through technology, social media and institutional inaction.

Hon George-Massicote led a discussion seminar during the conference, which focused on addressing facilitated violence against women, the role of parliament in prevention, protection and policy reform.

“This important discussion formed part of the CPA’s continuing commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and promoting gender equality across the Commonwealth.”

More than a moral responsibility

Hon George-Massicote said she was encouraged by the insights shared by colleagues throughout the Commonwealth and by the expressions of goodwill shared towards the Virgin Islands.

“I recognise we now have both the opportunity and obligation to learn from these experiences and to strengthen our national response to the issues discussed. As Speaker, I remain committed to working with fellow legislators, community organisations and international partners to develop a comprehensive and coordinated approach to addressing violence against women in all its forms.”

This commitment, she added, is not only a “moral responsibility” but also a reflection of the kind of society the VI is aspiring to build.

“One grounded in equality, dignity, justice and respect for all.”

Hon George-Massicote's statements come as the territory is observing Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

My girl just enjoy the trip and do not get caught up! You are the Speaker of the House. How are you going to do anything about violence towards women? Violence towards anybody is bad, whether man or woman.

Using her platform to speak about it is actually doing something about it. It's called raising awareness.

Raising awareness what! People just love to hear themselves talk. All we do is TALK in the BVI. Didn't they put a committee together to clean up Road Town, with big names, pomp and celebration yet 6 months later it looks like complete s$@t? The powers don't care because every month they are on a plane, 1st class on our dime seeing nice places, so they have no issue with home looking like a run down ghetto. So, yes, all we do is TALK! What are the options available to any woman in violent situations? NONE, just talk! NEXT!!!

Nothing wrong about addressing violence against women but also address the set of bull nonsense some women do as well.

Studies shows women are the most violent. Violence towards children and elderly is usually a woman thing. If you can be violent to children and elderles that must be quite a depraved mind. Use your platform to promote nonviolence. Check all the stats and you'll see psychological, verbal violence are initiated by women. Women usually stike first before getting gheir bubble burst. I do not condone violence but until it is looked at truthfully the lies and biases will get us nowhere. Then we can truly address domestic violence workplace violence and the rest

The same way the speaker stood up and start advocating for women against domestic violence don’t you think a man should stand up and advocate for men that is suffering from domestic violence/abuse as well? Any man that allows a woman to rob them blind is allowing themselves to be and love being robbed by a woman. As a man, I will never allow/permit myself to be robbed by any woman. That woman is not yet born. Kitty cat or sob stories is not going to do it for me.
