BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI - Japhix Television (JTV) Journalist, Ms Cathy O. Richards has recalled the perils of moving to the Virgin Islands from Guyana and encountering a culture shock over how locals would treat expat journalists plying their trade.

In a panel discussion with 'Honestly Speaking' radio moderator Mr Claude O. Skelton-Cline, along with Reuben J. A. Stoby of Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) and Ronn A. Grant of 284 News, Ms Richards detailed her shocking experience of receiving death threats in the early years of her career in the VI.

Death threats came from men - Ms Richards

She said the threats came mostly from local men.

"I've had several threats to my life, I've had threats to my job, I've had threats in every angle that you can really think of... because of my reporting, and I think I faced a lot of it also because I am a woman," she said on the Tuesday, May 5, 2020, edition of the 'Honestly Speaking' radio show.

Ms Richards noted that while she has grown tough in the industry, moving to the VI as a journalist was definitely a culture shock, but she remains passionate about the job as the industry changes with social media and technology.

VINO's Stoby said he could not recall any instances of personal victimisation; however, he said compared to other places like his home country of Guyana, locals in the VI are very reserved and often reluctant to speak to the media.

Meanwhile, Mr Grant of 284 Media, the only journalist on the panel from the Virgin Islands, says for him, practising journalism in the Territory and already being known in the community, means being held to a different standard.

Locals want local Journalists to treat them differently - Mr Grant

"One of the challenges that I've found being a born and raised BVIslander, [is] because we are such a small knit community and because everyone is so aware of who you are and where you come from," he said persons would reach out to inquire about why he did a certain story.

"You find persons who feel as though because you are a born and raised Virgin Islander that you have some sort of a level or weigh-in and because of that you have to treat them differently," he said.

All the journalists on the panel shared their passion for the job with a consensus that each media house would approach stories differently, while at the same time offering a platform for Virgin Islanders to share their views.

To woww, you don't like to hear her on the news. How many locals do we have stepping up to the plate to be journalists/broadcasters?? Questions you have to ask. How many locals are interested in these following jobs
      1) Journalism/Broadcaster
      2) Nursing
      3) Auto mechanic/Technicians
      4) Plumbers
      5) Police Officers
      6) Farmers/Fisher
      7) Electricians etc.
      8) Teachers
      9) Air Traffic controllers
kudos to locals who are already in those types of jobs listed above. The harsh reality is a lot of younger locals aren't taking up the mantle to head in these types of careers. Rewarding careers to booth. Could it be locals think these types of jobs are beneath them? Could it be they don't have interest because they were not educated to see these are good jobs. Could it be parents push their children to think about being just lawyers,Doctors and accountants, when we need more technical persons in the workforce?

Journalism should have no boundary once it is fair and balanced. B.V Islanders irrespective of what you may see in many blogs are quiet and peaceful people who would prefer to stay in their lane but become very offensive or in some cases aggressive when others crossed their path without at least acknowledging their rights to be there. Journalists generally have enjoyed the freedom to ply their trade here in the Territory without much hindrance. It is true that an ex-pat Journalist would receive more scrutiny from that of a local Journalist even when they report on the same story. Also, there is always public pressure in reporting certain incidents when the subjects are local vs Expats. All be it, journalists should strive to seek and report the truth in any incident to the public, regardless of who may be involved. Views/blogs should be allowed to share their views without cost for slander, damage to any person, or for the mare aim of disrupting public order or unity as we see from time to time. In the final analysis truth matters.

I'm not dismissing her story but I was surprised about the culture shock statement. On a cultural level particularly dealing with violence the two country are on different levels. Come to your own conclusion. What I would say for an expat journalist there is always the threat of being sent out from the VI.
    • Its a shock (09/05/2020, 04:19) Like (0) Dislike (0) Reply
I lived in three countries before coming to the BVI and visited another thirty countries but have never experience such open hostility to foreigners. Locals any where are protective of their rights and culture but rarely with duch open hostility to people who have even been here for 50 years. People are generally more protective in subtle ways without putting other to open shame and sre generally more accepting of long-term residents and citizens. Now this hostility has become a major part of the BVI culture. Guest what? We are now advertising to the world. I have had friends calling to ask, is there a civil war down there
      • @It’s a shock (09/05/2020, 23:44) Like (0) Dislike (0) Reply
There are some who might like to paint that picture to the outside world. I do believe that there are more expats than locals blogging on these sites and using them as a way of aggression towards VIslanders. I can guarantee, that the sort of behavior that is expressed on these sites would never be expressed on the radio because accents will be the marker for locals and no locals.

Pay close attention to the fact that anything that is said that is not in favor of expats gets a large number of dislikes while anything that is in the best interest of the expat (eg. naturalization) gets a large number of likes. If locals were the main bloggers and out to get the expats, then this should have been the other way around.

Cathy might be born in Guyana but she’s more of a Virgin Islander by heart than those who born in Cottage hospital, Peebles that’s now known as Dr. Orland Smith hospital. Like it or not she’s one of us. She love and care for the BVI community and gets involved in anyway she can. Cathy is a journalist’s by trade. She’s coves the happenings of the Virgin Islands. The happens that we create. If We get a full year of pure positivity and nothing else then she has no choice to cover that. If she covered anything else is fake news. If we create 1 years of negativity, robbing, killing, drug runs, wicked politicians, Corrupted police etc as a journalist she have to cover those stories. If individuals don’t want to have negative stories publish then don’t do negative stupidness. Outside of being a Journalist Cathy is an amazing human. She’ doesn’t bother anyone and often be found in her own lane. The small minded people within our community just need up wise up and grow up rather acting stupid and doing stupid things. As for Ron Grant I fully respect you for taken on the roll. We’re a small community and someone you have to cover a certain news that’s included saying a name or two of someone who’s do something very bad. It’s not easy but don’t mean it’s wrong. As for Mr. Stoby they will have hell to catch you for your the fastest man I know. I wish all of you all the best in life and keep following your heart.

Generally, legal team like to blogg on matters involving the law:
but because this matter involves freedom of the press, alledgedly under ATTACK, the legal team and associates after consultation, try to make meaningful sense of the topic, because its the journalist miss Richards who make the headline. of ["threats to life as a journalist"]
And that is why, honestly I admire the unbiasness of this news site,to publish all what was said, and let we the people, blogg on the topic, mainly, and to agree and disagree with some bloggers..
First of all, there is a criminal definition for what is a threat to one's life, with an imminent danger of death, because we in the bvi, respect fundamental human rights and freedoms and the rule of law.We can be a little lawless at times, but not discriminately violent to others.
Any new comer to the bvi, before arriving from a country outside the bvi, would have been told, that tolians don't like islandman etc etc and foolishness such as that.but quickly, you get a tolian man or tolian woman and sweetness start.

And as soon as,you settle in you will realized that the bvi, on a ratio, has the most loving and embracing people on plannet earth. we all feel the love, even from the government.

Certainly if these threats were so severe,to a point, where the journalist believed that her life was in danger, she would have done two things:-

    (1) Make an official report to the CID of the RVIPF or
    (2) Call travel wize and book the first flight back to Guyana for her own safety.

Long time ago in the 60's all the way to maybe early 80's, when expat women, use to go out with tolian married-men, the from-here wife, use to threaten the expat woman with "going to immigration or labour etc" LOL.

Putting the joke aside, I am just trying to negate the statement, that my dear peaceful citizens [BOTC] ,belongers and good expat residents threatened to KILL this lady, just for reporting a mellay. We like good news and a little mellay on vino.
Without the written facts, to suppot this claim, Legal team, cannot verify these statements of threat to life.

Here you have brother stoby of vino, who is also a Guyanese, friendly guy,who mingle nicely in the community,in social events etc, and he said, that he never experienced such threats from the good and loving people of the virgin islands.

Stoby is correct, because we are small in popular but powerful with pride,we are indeed reserved on talking to the media, because we are all related,in blood, work or mutual friendship, but to say, we are like the middle-east,where journalists have been beheaded for investigative journalism is a misleading perception of the bvi people..

Politicians, and the Governors, get all their blows from the bloggers on vino. Some support and some against.

No insults and no defamation of persons' character from vino bloggers,we just enjoy blogging..

We are confident that the police will do everything within its statutory powers to ensure that our journalists are protected, because we the people have no intent to harm a journalist for bringing news to us,.

It is a Fundamental Right to life under our BVI Constitution, and that section states:-

[" Every person has a RIGHT to LIFE which SHALL be protected by LAW:-NO person shall be deprived intentionally of his or her life"]

That is what our BVI Constitution gave us as a Fundamental Right.

So madam,if any one threatened you, GO TO THE POLICE. Because right now legal team cannot believe you as being truthful, because you did not present the facts,to allow me to apply it to the law,to determine if any offence was commited, under the law of the BVI.

Good lock, protection and god's guidance to all journalists
    OK

It doesn't matter where Ms. Richards is from. We are all part of one human race. However, for someone who has chosen to be in the field of journalism, I do find it difficult to listen to her. Her voice needs some work and so does Zan for that matter. Anyone who is in voice media should have voices that are clear, pleasant to the ear, easy to understand and have good and proper diction. One's accent has nothing to do with proper diction
  • Don’t make sense (07/05/2020, 23:29) Like (4) Dislike (1) Reply
What kind of stories Ms Richards could have written to cause this ? The BVI lacks proper journalists who goes after the real stories . All I see on jtv and others r the happenings in the BVI . I do recall for a few years vino and platinum news would do some investigative pieces but now all there is is vino alone platinum appears to have gone dead and not recover since the 2017 September storms . But vino is trying but needs some more work . The people of the BVI needs a fourth estate , a watch dog , sorry we don't have that . So trying to understand what kind of story would cause her to be threatened by a local . Maybe use the energy to do proper stories rather than becoming the news and about rubbing shoulders
