ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Deputy Premier and Minister for Financial Services, Labour and Trade Hon Lorna G. Smith, OBE has refuted assertions by radio broadcaster Zan Lewis that she was “pushing a different agenda” during the 2023 elections campaign compared to what she is doing now as a member of government.

“You were pushing an agenda two weeks ago on the way how you see things but you are now faced with a different agenda. How difficult it is for you to adjust to meet this new agenda and not able to satisfy the needs or what you told the people?” Mr Lewis asked Hon Smith on May 16, 2023, during a press conference alongside Premier Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) to update the public on their recent trip to the United Kingdom (UK).

‘I was pushing an agenda for greater efficiency’- Hon Smith

“I was not pushing a different agenda. I was pushing an agenda for greater efficiency,” Hon Smith replied, explaining that one of the things she would work towards, in line with her campaign promise, is cutting red tape, as she highlighted the long delays in processing work permits and trade licenses.

“And that is what I plan to do, so it’s the same agenda. And I am so happy that I have the opportunity as Deputy Premier to make sure that I can follow through on this promise. So, it is not a different agenda at all. It’s to make sure what I promised, I can deliver,” Hon Smith responded.

The Deputy Premier further explained that she is meeting a situation where there is need for improvement, “and everybody recognises that there is need for improvement in the services that we deliver.”

No regrets, no apologies

Mr Lewis then asked Hon Smith if she had any regrets or apologies for aligning with the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) to form the government, while a member of the National Democratic Party (NDP).

Hon Smith’s move caused the Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM), NDP and Progressives United (PU) to remain in the Opposition and came as the three parties were reportedly having a power struggle.

“So, would it be correct to say, Mrs Smith, you have no regrets from the decision you made?” Mr Lewis asked.

“None, none,” Hon Smith promptly replied.

“No apologies to anyone?” Mr Lewis asked.

“No apology,” Hon Smith responded.

‘Exciting time’ in VI- Hon Smith

Meanwhile, Hon Smith said it is indeed an exciting time in the Virgin Islands, including with the start of direct flights by American Airlines next month.

She also said the students in the UK were “very enthusiastic about the new administration and, in fact, asked a number of questions, "and we had a very lively discussion with them. I found that to be truly inspiring,” Hon Smith said.

It's very obvious that you don't live in ZONE 6. Hon Walwyn has been highly visible throughout the district unlike his predecessor.
Be reminded that the representatives have not been sworn into their official roles until the first seating of HOA.

Mrs. Lorna Smith, Deputy Premier, there is no reason for an apology or regret, you did nothing wrong nor did you break a law. As a Woman, I would have done the exact thing without any regrets. Thank you for opening the door for women with Political aspirations in the BVI. A Woman will become the 1st Woman Premier in the BVI in 2027.

You said you would address the rising cost of living so with all hands on deck, please increase the Social Development Monthly grant that some Seniors are getting " a mere $200 " for the last 30 plus years and while many of our Seniors were turned down by Social Development from getting that etra $200 from the politicians, all that money is right back into the Government coffers. Life is more difficult for them now since the supermarkets have skyrocketed there food prices. This is just my opinion on how the Government can help granny and pappy.

Lorna can do very little to address the rising cost of living. That’s a global issue.

I mixed my votes, but it seems to me the NDP & some PVIM supporters feel the only people who can run the country well are them. They seem to be the loudest critics and blog the most negativity against the VIP Government whereas the VIP supporters are more reserve and quieter but yet deadly when it comes to voting for VIP as evident the last few elections.

@ Youth Yup! Good observation. Somebody FINALLY recognize the facts - we don’t go around sounding like a huge cacophony, but know who we are to the bone and show it when necessary! Although I wasn’t there in person to vote in these last two elections, I’ll NEVER stop being a VIP Supporter. Let the haters hate, go right ahead ….3-2-1.

Those guys in the Opposition caused themselves not to be in the Government now solely due to their inflated egos, greed, selfishness, power over people, and lack of respect for women in power. They have no one else to blame but themselves.

They sure did. They got caught sleeping. They thought they were going to use her but she had already peeped their cards. That was a awesome Powerful Political move. Let them sit in the opposition for the next four years and stew in the stupid sauce. They also have four years to start having respect for Women in leadership roles.

I couldn’t agree with you more on the mere allowance that some Senior Citizens receive monthly. But, this is just not for Lorna in the corner to address; this is an issue for ALL of the elected representatives to fix. In addition to this they also need to review the Social Security stipends and the Government pension for the retirees as well. After all, the cost of living in this place is extremely high and the prices at the supermarkets go higher and higher every week. We are depending on Lorna, the Premier and all of them to initiate the increase in these allowances to help the seniors- “our golden gems”. Show us that you care.

Is that $200. For seniors who are not getting a benefit from SSB? Are seniors when reached 65 getting some sort of old age money from SSB? Or just $200. from Social Development?

The apologies should come from the four GREEDY, POWER HUNGRY PLOTTERS COIL UP IN THE OPPOSITION CHAIRS LIKE THE SNAKES THAT THEY ARE. THEY NEED TO CONTINUE HANGING THEIR HEADS IN SHAME.

Some people are just shameless, self-serving, self-interest, untrustworthy, disloyal hacks. It does matter how long one has a snake gir a pet, it will try to kill you. It who snakes are. Remember the fable about a scorpion that want a ride across the river on a dog and promise not to sting the dog. The dog believe the scorpion and let it hitch a ride. Journey completed, he stung the dog who asked why. The scorpion responded it who I’m. VIP better watch its back for the knives that may out to stab it with a smile.

It has occurred to me to ask here as we have a new Minister of Labour: Is it a part of Labour's mandate to ensure that we are not a community rife with labour issues or that there are an over abundance of young persons in the community that are not working? And is it Labour's mandate to first ensure that it's citizens are working before issuing new labour permits bringing in yet another hundred persons and acting simply as a rubber stamp? Also seeing that the latter seems to be your biggest mandate, is there a small Unit within this Government that investigates labour issues within these businesses that only hire from outside and why? Seems as if there is abuse being suffered by some of these work permit holders, i.e. low salaries, sexual abuse, etc, as BVIslanders are never given a chance. Believe it or not, I personally know too many young BVIslander young men and young women who apply for jobs and are turned away again and again while work permits are automatically renewed year after year. Who are looking out for them? Entry level positions are gone before they are advertised and even mid-level positions in offices, hotels, the Hospital, et cetera. Who are looking out for us in your Ministry/Department and Human Resources Departments island-wide? We are a small country who loves everyone as is shown, but when we are left to rob and steal and, yes, run dope, who can we blame if we cannot find a job in the legal job market? Please, somebody, look out for our young people. They are our future.
